What's Your View On Marijuana?

Post by oxymoron »

I want to know what you guys think about Marijuana? Should it be legalized or not, is it bad or good, etc.

I went cold turkey off that thing over 3 years ago. Good riddance if you ask me. Its more trouble than benefits, by far.

I went cold turkey off cigarettes too, about 6 months earlier. It was much harder than weed, haha.

I think we* should legalise all recreational drugs. Treating drugs as a criminal issue rather than a health issue is a waste of resources. Transition to a licencing system, like we* have for vehicles. 1 day course for a "responsible alcohol" ticket, 3 days for tobacco and/or cannabis. If you want a Meth licence you have to do a 21 day intensive course (for example) with a first aid ticket. Same for heroin. etc... If you supply to underage/unlicenced users you get your licence suspended. If you mess up on drugs, you lose your licence. Just like vehicle licences...

Does this idea pass other peoples' smell test?

* I am from Victoria, Australia, your laws may vary...

I still have the same two concerns about outright legalization. Perhaps they've been addressed well in states/countries that now allow recreational use? I'd love to know.

Anyway, the concerns are:

1) There is no way to prevent/police the damage of second hand smoke in the home around infants/children. As I understand it, the effects of second hand pot smoke are more immediate, dangerous, and damaging than those of second hand cigarette smoke.

2) Unlike with alcohol, there is no way for an arresting officer to know with certainty if my driving error was caused by something I smoked an hour ago (high while driving) or a week ago (sober while driving). If I was sober but had evidence of recent use in my blood, I'm fucked.

Anyway, those have been long standing objections I've had to outright legalization. I'd be happy to see more decriminalization and an easing off the drug war, but I can understand that there are still some legitimate public safety concerns.

This has been my only real problem with legalization. You need a system in place that can detect if you have had been smoking pot in the last 10 minutes or in the last 10 days that doesn't involve giving a blood sample. Other than that, legalize.

The only people benefiting are the jails and the DEA. Oh, and the companies that use drug screening to not pay for you getting injured on the job.

I'd be fine giving a blood sample if it could actually tell the difference and prevent me from getting hit with an unjust penalty. Can a blood test tell the difference?

They can tell how much THC is in your system but not for how long its been there I do not think.
