The difference is that metalcore was once damn good. Check out some of the early metalcore bands like Acme, Rorschach, Starkweather, Botch, Cave In, Catharsis, Prayer for Cleansing, Converge, Chokehold, Groundwork, Unbroken, Iconoclast, Gehenna, Deadguy, and Systral.

Even a good number of the late 90s/early 2000s "emotional" bands weren't terrible. I can get into some Poison the Well, From Autumn to Ashes, Remembering Never, Eyes Upon Separation, Red Roses for a Blue Lady, etc...

Today the metalcore scene is full of scenester bullshit and weak ass melodeath rip-off nonsense.

Now glam metal - that was always terrible.

I realized today that I'm not big on much "basic" thrash. Outside of the big four, everything I tend to like is either mixed with another genre, or technical/progressive. Plain old thrash doesn't really grab me most of the time. I guess Havok is an exception.

They're both hated on a lot and got a bit of mainstream noteriety (nu-metal still didn't get as much as glam metal did, though), but other than that, what are the similarities?

I think a lot of people get confused on what nu-metal is exactly. They like to lump all the late 90s bands into that catagory, and that's not what it means. Nu-metal isn't a term meant to describe the 90s era; it's a distinctly hip-hop infused movement in metal during the 90s. Bands like Limp Bizkit, Korn, Saliva, P.O.D., and Papa Roach represent nu-metal. (I've also heard Disturbed put in with them, but I don't agree with that and David Dramain himself has stated he doesn't agree with it either as he decribes their style as Reggae-influenced metal rather than hip-hop influenced metal.)

Of course, as much as I hear people rip on Nu Metal, I only know of... Korn. I guess P.O.D. or somesuch might count?


EDIT: Also, has anybody on here ever hit Chaos in Tejas? It seems like it works kinda as a metal version of SxSW, but I'm not totally sure as to how I would find out which bands are going to be where and such for next year. I want to hit up Eternal Champion, among others, if I can.

They had fuckin Bolt Thrower, Benediction, and Manilla Road last year.

I'm keeping an eye on the lineup this year to see how it pans out.

Yeah, I tried hitting that website this year beforehand, but it wasn't working for some reason. Wouldn't load. Hopefully it will work this year though.

I'm mad, I could have seen St. Vitus and Manilla Road, among many, many others.

Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Slipknot and Evanescence had huge mainstream popularity during late 90s and early 2000s and must be the metal bands that have had the most mainstream success in USA during the last 15 years or so. Disturbed, POD and Drowning Pool (+Korn) were also really big and mainstream at one point.

Nu metal's kinda on the downslide huh? Seems like most fans jumped ship and moved on to trendy/poppy metalcore some years ago. When I worked at a middle school (2 years back) I never once heard kids talk about nu metal.

But anyway, enough talk about false metal.
