well, i see it anyway. you kinda have to use a little creativity but it looks like THE if you look at it right. i can see why this would be a common mistake, the characters are just a little close together so that the left side of "gai" is a little too close to the right of "den" so it makes this "H" illusion.

I think the funniest thing about this thread is not the original mistake but the fact that people have found the topic interesting enough to justify 7 pages of discussion 0_o

the latest Retronauts episode is about Ninja Gaiden and Bob Mackey mentions how he always thought it was "Ninja The Gaiden" when he was younger because of the Kanji. So it wasn't just me!

Thought for those who saw the kanji as 'the'. Had you not been exposed to much Japanese or Chinese script before playing the game? I'd seen plenty of kaiju and kung fu movies, western bastardized anime, bilingual Chinese restaurant menus, and noticed the Japanese script on my Transformers and such before the game came out. Not that I could read any of it, but I at least recognized it when I saw it, even if stylized.

Maybe those who were less familiar with the eastern script were more likely to misread it.

like I said when I started the thread years ago, I was about 8 or whatever - I think in my head it was supposed to be stylized so that the word "THE" looked like Chinese/Japanese lettering.

When I was young I thought the kanji looked like a "the" as well. Sometimes I called it "Ninja the Gaiden" just to be funny (though like many folks I thought Gaiden was pronounced "GAY-den").

However, I knew that it was indeed Japanese text and that it didn't actually say "the."
