A good multiplayer/co-op game?
I'v been searching for a while now for a good multiplayer/co-op game that me and my boyfriend can play together. Having voice chat would be a plus. We're both PC gamers, and while I don't mind overhead/3rd person views my bf hates them. So something that has a choice between FPS or 3rd person would be great. Also we don't have a ton of money so a pay to play game isn't for us. A game you buy once like L4D2 is more in our budget.
We've tried everything from L4D to Borderlands to even free MMO's like Last Chaos and Fiesta. But nothing really works for us. He likes L4D and Borderlands while I like the questing of MMO's. I mean for a very long time we played L4D and L4D2 together (we actually met in a L4D game lol), but mindless zombie killing got dull and boring for me.
We're both waiting for Elder Scrolls Online, but that's going to be a long wait.
A little about us to help you figure out which games we like and so on:
We like co-op over multiplayer because then its just us and we don't have to deal with other people. Voice chat is important to us, we could use outside chat programs but we don't really like any of them...and we've tried a ton of them.
He seems to be ok with mindless killing and doesn't really like "challanges". While I hate mindless killing and love when a game challanges me. He likes Borderlands, L4D, and Skyrim. I like Fallout 3, NV, Garry's Mod, Minecraft, Don't Starve and other simple silly games. We both sort of like Garry's mod, I think I like it more then him because I tend to be more creative then he is...that's what being an artist does to you I guess lol.
Hope that gives you an idea or two. We need the ideas since we haven't played a game together for a while now...we talk everyday but gaming brings us closer.

Are you PC, console users, or both?
One obvious PC title that comes to mind is Diablo III. I know lots of people love it, but you may have passed over it for other reasons. I haven't played it other than once at a friends house, but if it didn't have voice chat Vent would possibly be a useful application.

PC, I thought that was obvious but I guess those games are on consoles now huh...I'm the console gamer of the two of us, he owns a N64 and that's it lol.
Diablo 3? Heard of it...heard of the older titles as well...never played any of them. Isn't it that dungeon crawler?

^ Diablo III is coming to PS3 soon. Borderlands is more or less the Diablo model of gameplay in 3D, so, that might be something to look at.
Could possibly look at the buy-to-play model MMOs.
Guild Wars isn't really an MMO per se - the towns and such are in public space so to speak, but areas where the game takes place are instanced. It's billed more as a co-op RPG.
Each of the campaigns are maybe the length of a single player game. Not the most intricate stories, but good, and some at least fairly unique.
Missions have different levels of completion to shoot for, and other areas can be entered on hardcore mode to full clear/etc for farming and such.
Guild Wars 2 is set up very differently, as it's actually made to be an MMO, with only story quests and dungeons being instanced. The general questing type system is a bit different - more or less proximity based - but there are other things to seek out, like jumping puzzles, and they do a lot of limited-time or seasonal events.
The Secret World also went buy-to-play and is pretty story oriented for an MMO as well.
If you're not averse to paying a fee, FFXIV: ARR launches in about a month, open beta should start sooner. It's very much derived from modern MMOs, but still, from what I've played of the beta, maintains a bit of the aesthetics and somewhat story-driven production that SE tends to do.
If you're just looking for something fun to blast through, I know back in the day my friends and I liked to throw on one of the Serious Sam games during LAN parties. Granted, there was basically no challenge in coop mode, since you'd just spawn at the latest checkpoint with all weapons people had gotten so far/etc...but it was fun.

If you've never touched the Diablo series, I'd say that you're in for a treat. I'm pretty sure when they made PSO for Dreamcast, they said, "Let's make a Diablo II clone, but based Phantasy Star. While we're at it we should make it a third person view."GirlGamer55 wrote:PC, I thought that was obvious but I guess those games are on consoles now huh...I'm the console gamer of the two of us, he owns a N64 and that's it lol.

Looks nice, but bf doesn't like the 3rd person view. Good try though...we both liked the sound of it but that view is the deal breaker sadly. That's a really tough situation. Lemme try and think... What about Saints Row III? That's multi-player and FPS. It has random carnage AND more interesting mission/objective-style missions. There's a complete pack with all the DLC that turns up periodically on sale via Steam. Also, I think one or two of the latest Red Faction games are co-op.

Actually, that's third person.marurun wrote:That's a really tough situation. Lemme try and think... What about Saints Row III? That's multi-player and FPS. The hard part is him not liking third person. That is severely going to limit you. That, mixed with the two of you having differing likes on games makes things a bit tough. I can't think of much to really help you.
I doubt you're looking for stuff of the type, but Payday is something along the lines of L4D.

idk which Saints Row I have but I am not a fan of it.marurun wrote:That's a really tough situation. Lemme try and think... What about Saints Row III? That's multi-player and FPS. Yeah I know it limits us, that's why I said a game that gives you the option of being in first person or 3rd person, even a behind the shoulder cam would work for him...idk why he doesn't like it. Might have something to do with not being able to see what he's doing...idk.Forlorn Drifter wrote:Actually, that's third person.marurun wrote:That's a really tough situation. Lemme try and think... Yeah i'm not really looking for something like L4D.
I convinced him we should play Garry's mod more but we still want something else to play.
