Anyone know any good indie JRPGs for the PC?

Post by ZeroAX »

Well....basically what the title says?

I've found many indie games I liked lately, mostly because I've looked more leftfield than the usual "indie" stuff that gets coverage and become big hits.

So after getting a major platformer fix lately, I want to turn into one of my other favorite genres.

JRPGs. Anyone know of any good indie JRPGs for the PC, in the style of either the 16-bit or the 32-bit era?

But no parodies please. They are fun, but I'm into the mood for an epic adventure right now :)

EDIT (they don't have to be made in Japan of course)

Hmm... Septerra Core perhaps?

Other than that, uhm... Final Fantasy 7 was recently released on Steam. Though I'm sure you've already heard. There's also Analogue: A Hate Story, but that's not an RPG, it's a visual novel. But it does have a very serious sci-fi story and it's also on Steam.

Past that I honestly don't know. The rest that I know of are all comedy based parodies and such.

Ahriman's Prophecy is pretty fun - and free! There are a bunch of sequels (the Aveyond games) which are also quite decent - those cost money though.

Eternal Eden is another one that I enjoyed. I guess there's a sequel being released soon.

Final Fantasy: Endless Nova is a fan-made Final Fantasy game (NOT simply a ROM hack of an existing game). It's quite good and feels like one of the 16-bit titles.

Anachronox isn't Japanese, but it's awesome

Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Anachronox and Septerra Core are both decent - but they're not indie games!

True. Though I wouldn't call a RPG that's funnier than Earthbound and Disgaea just "decent"! (Though it looks like OP doesn't want funny games so it was a bad recommendation anyways)

Try Battle Moon Wars and let me know how it is. I keep meaning to try it, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
