I just recently got into retro gaming because i just wasn't enjoying modern gaming like i used to. I had a budget of $55 to get a console and a few games. Initially, i looked into getting a original NES and that was way out of the question (I hadn't discovered the universe of forums yet). So i put this idea away for a while. Eventually, found out about clones and revived that idea. While researching clones I found people either hated them or loved them. Personally, i think they're perfect for people entering or trying out retro gaming. What do you guys think?

Some clones are good, but NES clones are not. You'd be better off with emulation.

some are crap.
They are made with cheap plastic.
I've come across some silver YOBO nes clones, but I dont buy them, since they look crappy. and i find them somtimes without plugs, So I dont want to risk it. Controlers are sloppy too. They feel like they're gonna break.
I also own a Playmessiah Generation NEX. I use this guy every once in a while. Plastic is better on it. It being newish and not worn in, Its hard to remove the carts from the system. All the yanking has already cracked some plastic parts on my NEX.
I guess some complain about compatiblity with this console, but I'm either a non-purist or dont care about it. It plays most everything.
But as I look at amazon, its maintained its price. I bought it for $70 a few years back and its $70+ now.

The Retron 5 is looking pretty interesting since it uses software emulation based on an Android platform. It also consolidates a bunch of different consoles into one. Hopefully the compatibility will be as good as they're claiming.
However since your reason for getting a clone would be to get a cheaper NES that would be out of the question since it looks like it's going to have a $100 price tag.
Most NES clones are NOAC clones, or "Nintendo on a chip" clones that copy most of the hardware on a single chip and they aren't the greatest as others have said. Each one comes with its own quirks involving color, compatibility and especially sound so it's hard to recommend a "best."
Still, I started collecting NES games with a Yobo FC Game Console myself. There's nothing wrong with finding a cheap clone and playing around until you can update to a real console (on a long enough timeline you're bound to find one for cheap). It's also not a bad idea to test the waters to see if you really want to stick with the hobby.
One suggestion though, if you do get a clone try to find one that can use official controllers since they often come with pretty awful ones.

I got an FC Twin when I was in college so I could play SNES games and it works well for that, but not so good for playing NES games. I've considered getting a Retrobit NES clone to play my carts so I can leave my Powerpak in the real system as it seems to work a bit better than my Yobo based on reviews I've seen. My local retro shop sells them, so if I decide to get one, I can pick it up the next time I'm there. I realize this probably won't happen, but I keep hoping someone will make a TurboDuo clone so I can play Turbo CD games without having to spend hundreds of dollars on a real one.
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.

I second the FC Twin for SNES games. If you just want retro and not specifically NES, that is a good choice. The only video option is composite, but it looks surprisingly good.

Turbo CD games are unlikely, as are optical disc clones in general, unless they find a legal way of emulating the BIOS of those consoles.
Which kind of sucks. Imagine a Retron 5-ish emulator box that would play any CD format game you throw at it.
