Re: Xbox One
I'll be interested to see how much sharing is possible in your creations though. I mean, if it's easy to make a game and share it then that sidesteps XBLIG, which means MS won't be making money on those games.
Re: Xbox One
I am not sure what does that mean, I always thought games were made on a PC using Windows that runs a game engine line Unreal for example and when the game is done they release it on discs/digital to be played on the console.
Yes, I do not know much in that area

There are a couple things they've mentioned.RCBH928 wrote:I am not sure what does that mean, I always thought games were made on a PC using Windows that runs a game engine line Unreal for example and when the game is done they release it on discs/digital to be played on the console.

First is that games can be self-published and still be part of the larger XBL marketplace and utilize things like achievements and cloud storage. Right now, XBL has a separate Indie Games Channel for self-published games. They're subject to a number of restrictions, and don't get the kind of exposure that popular games in XBLA in general can get.
Following that, sure, games get developed on a PC. But, they get tested on consoles. In order to do that, you need a console that can run in-progress, unsigned code, which historically has been a special version of the hardware included as part of an official developer kit that costs thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars.
What MS has indicated is that any Xbox One will be able to get a switch flipped in software (remotely, by MS) and be a dev unit.
I'm sure there'll still be dev units that differ in hardware - more RAM to run unoptimized code for example - but this will likely be a great middle ground.

Re: Xbox One
But what harm could they do with a dev unit other than spend a lot of time developing a game and submit it to Microsoft?ninjainspandex wrote:Hackers are gonna have fun with this oneisiolia wrote: What MS has indicated is that any Xbox One will be able to get a switch flipped in software (remotely, by MS) and be a dev unit.
Unless a Dev unit allows you to play unofficial games, then there could be a problem.
Re: Xbox One
I think it'd not so much be playing unofficial games, since barring stuff that can't pass certification due to content/legality, there should be mechanisms for putting it on XBLA anyway.sonic2041 wrote: Unless a Dev unit allows you to play unofficial games, then there could be a problem.
The concern would be that you're giving people the ability to run unsigned code, so pirated games and such...
Though, I'd imagine that there will be opt-in terms and conditions designed to prevent that. Maybe it'll need to be in contact with MS's servers while you're using it in that mode or something.

@isiolia
I am in favor of separating the games. This is a huge problem for me on the iTunes store. I really would like to just browse the "Ports" section to see what games are available that were on a 90's console or PC(like Doom) , and an Indie section where you get to see the latest "different" style , and then maybe another section for games with big studios and higher budgets behind them like Rage HD , Infinity Blade , The Walking Dead. Mixing them all together really makes it hard to pick the good ones out.
Why does the developer console costs so much more? Are they any use after the console is discontinued ?
