Storage advice?

Post by GirlGamer55 »

I happen to still live with my parents (i'm 22 but I don't have a job and I have 0 cash. No one is hiring so no I am not a 45 year old fat guy living in his parents basement [sorry but I have to put this in here because idk how many times I have had people ask me this]) so my collection is confined to my bedroom. And when its all said and done I don't have a ton of space. I have a wall of bookshelves just filled with books (I like reading) and the smallest one is where I store most of my games. So yeah I need help with this one. Right now I have three shelves in the bookcase (the top is being used by video game related plushes and toys) the first shelf has two large video game storage boxes (you know the ones actually branded by Nintendo and made for their games?). One is a N64 one holding my small collection of N64 games. The other is a very bulky and large one I actually have to pull off of the shelf to get into. This one is a NES one. It's supposed to hold idk 15 carts, a NES and the plugins/controllers. The top opens up and I store the NES carts in their slots and use the space made for the NES to store the rest and my few SNES games (I'm running out of space in this one) and the pull out drawer on the bottom I store manuals. The second shelf is where all my Gamecube, PS2, PS3 and Xbox games are. I have so many of them that some are being hidden by the still growing collection. On the bottom is where I have all my NP mags, game guides and other video game related books, my small bin of Atari games and small box of Sega Gen games. On the side of it I have a CD tower where I store my PS1 games, my single Sega Dreamcast game and PS2 games that don't have a proper case.

My media center thing is on the nearby wall and it has on top of it all my bins of DVD's and i'm talking like 6 or 7 FULL bins and then theres some stacks on top of those because I ran out of room in the bins (I organize them by action, cartoon, anime, drama...and so on). On one side is my like idk 15 year old tv..love that thing. But it's to big for the space so it ends up overhanging the "box" like area and when I have to change consoles I have to drag it out and struggle to plug in the RCA cables into the back (I know I need a switcher box..I'm just not sure which one I need and I don't have a ton of money). On the otherside are almost all of my systems. It also has 3 shelves. The first shelf has my N64, SNES and NES. The second shelf is GameCube, Dreamcast and Sega Gen. The last shelf is Xbox and PS3. Now on the topic of my PS3...I think being in this semi enclosed shelf is overheating it, so I have to move it and store it in a different place..where I have no idea. Oh and of course all these wires for these consoles? All fed around the back of the consoles and out to the front of the shelf on the righthand side, so I have a mess of wires. I would try to get holes drilled into the back of the media thing but I wouldn't be able to access the cables then. So I need help with storing/organizing them too.

And don't get me started on my handhelds. Basicly all of my gameboy games (GB,GBC and GBA) are in a travel/carrying case that I have to unzip and sort through to find a game, it also holds a gameboy of any size, so I use it to hold my original GBC. My PSP and games are in a small...bin of sorts which has been filled so now I have to stack games on top of it. My DS and games are just laying out, along with my original Gameboy, Gameboy Pockets x 2, an extra Gameboy Color, a broken GBA I need to fix and sell, a GB SP I need to sell and my Gameboy Advance. Oh and my two Game Gears and all my Game Gear games. And all of these are on a table behind me I actually use as a craft/repair/cleaning work table thing. I ran out of space so I really need help storing these. I only have a few ideas for storing my Gameboy games...all of them. One I could do what someone on here did and that's to get a card collecting binder and put them in those plastic things or kinda do what someone else did on here as well and put them in something I hang on the wall. But instead of a golf ball thing, I would use a spice rack like thing, which if you lay the games on their side, they do slide in. But that involves more work and might not fit all my games.

Ah and I should mention that besides the main bedroom area I have a small almost walk in closet type room that I turned into a computer room. That is where my work table and handhelds are. But besides that I just have my PC desk and a large shelf hanging on the wall I use for my Sailor Moon collection and other figurines.

I'm looking into getting a ikea cubby like thing: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70193745/ so I can lay it down sideways on the floor and use it to store extra gaming items like games/controllers/wires and consoles I don't play as often. But at the same time I sort of want my computer room to become my main gaming room, so I might bring all my stuff I do use often into here and put all the stuff I don't use in my media center in my bedroom, since I have an extra TV laying around that still works but isn't plugged in because I don't have space for it. Anyways I'm also in need of a TV stand that has storage below it for consoles. But that's small enough to fit next to my computer desk.

Like I said in the first bit, I have 0 cash. What little money I do have comes from doing random things for my parents. So whatever ideas you come up with have to be free/cheap and easy to do. I always keep my eyes open at yard sales and thrift stores for cheap furniture I could reuse somehow, but it's hard finding exactly what I want. Like with the Ikea thing, it's to expensive to buy from Ikea and when I do find them at yard sales they are almost always overpriced. And I can't build anything because I'm scared to death of power tools.

Maybe this is hopeless but hey a girl can dream right? :?

The mess of wires, note the blue tape. This is how I tell which ones go to which system.

Pics of your space might help us visualize what we're working with here.

Those ikea cubbies are great for storing books, not games. I keep my carts in pseudo-filing-cabinet bins but I bought a rotating DVD stand for games with cases. I find things that take advantage of vertical space while not having too much room in between shelves to be the best option.

Expertise: a small studio in Manhattan with a wife and a decently-sized collection.

As far as pictures go, either upload the attachment (below the submit button) or upload them to a image hosting site (like imgur or Photobucket) and link them here through URL tags.

Books? Eh...I wouldn't put books in something like that.

I have seen the filing cabinet idea and while I love it...so much storage...I like having them out in the open like in the cubbys so I can read the titles.

I would love to have a DVD rack, along with a mag/comic rack for my game guides but I can't afford them at the prices some people ask for them on craigslist.

And yeah I can see how something standing would save room but I just can't think of anything that would work the way I want it to.

I can say that for wires, I used zip wires and rolled them to an appropriate length. There is some slack on them but it's not insanely cluttered. I hate tangled wires.

If you have a Big Lots then you should be able to pick up a 3 port AV switch for about $4.

We used to have one...I might need to look up where they moved to, but you do know that it's an outlet place and each one has different items right?

And most of them are at the right length as is so zip ties wouldn't help much.

More pics...curse this 4 pic limit...ughhhhhh:
