A couple of bands attempted to simply their sound to appeal to a wider audience, but the result ended up being a sound too extreme for casual listeners and too poppy for death metal fans.
I hate it so much when this happers, no matter what the medium (movies, music, video games)
AppleQueso wrote: I guess the one exception is probably Cannibal Corpse, which remains one of the most popular bands of the era despite the fact that they really aren't all that accessible sounding.

^Jim Carrey was apparently a huge fan. I kinda doubt that cameo appearance alone is responsible for their popularity though.
BoneSnapDeez wrote:"Covenant" was on a major label.

Those Columbia Napalm Death and Carcass records weren't very good. And they were still way too extreme for a mainstream audience.
Don't forget about "Domination"!

To be fair to ND, those 90s albums were more the result of the band just kinda experimenting with a lot of different ideas and not really the result of them actively trying to appeal to anyone in particular.

Carcass is a different story from what I understand though. Apparently when they were working on Swansong, the label actually suggested that Walker learn to actually sing.

The major labels basically thought they'd get the next Metallica from extreme metal. Didn't work out for them!

Still, how often can you hear an extreme metal song in a mainstream movie? One as popular as Ace Ventura?

I think in the 90s major labels were willing to experiment with more extreme music. Bands like Ministry had albums on Warner Bros. - can't imagine that happening today.

Warner Bros. owns Roadrunner nowadays, so in a way it kinda already is happening today. Though, I honestly have no idea if they're actually doing anything with the label.

The Mortal Kombat movie had Napalm Death for like 4 seconds and an insturmental version of a Fear Factory song.

Does Roadrunner even have metal bands on their roster anymore?

Roadrunner has a ton of popular metal bands. Most of them are very whatever though, and a lot of them have become crap since going over (Opeth being a particularly disappointing one).

On my "MyYahoo" newsfeed page for the metal section, this columnist keeps calling Cannibal Corpse, Cannibus Corpse. And it's driving me insane! I'm not just talking a single typo, either, he calls them that through the entire article.

Supposedly he was doing a review on one of their concerts. Kind of hard to believe the guy was actually there if he can't even get the band's name right.
