Slim PS2: New Laser Question
I recently purchased a new Laser for my Slim PS2, and I learned of what is called an "Anti-Static Point" on it. I know I have to desolder it from the Laser, but my question is "Why?". Why exactly is it there, and what is the actual significance of it? Also, does anyone have any tips for getting it off of there when desoldering? I'm kind of a newb to soldering, only having replaced Game Cart Batteries before.

Re: Slim PS2: New Laser Question
It basically connects two traces to prevent damage from accidental static discharge while connecting it up. The Wii replacement laser also has it right on the ribbon cable. Remove the Static Point only after the Laser is installed.
1. Use a small Pencil Iron, plug in and let it heat all the way up.
2. Tin the Iron tip with a little Flux or Rosin Core Solder.
3. Shake off or quickly wipe off the solder.
4. Momentary touch the Static Point with the Pencil Iron tip to separate the two traces.
