I am not loyal to Sega in any way, in fact I am more of a Nintendo guy(and owned more Nintendo console) than any other manufacturer and I believe Mario is the franchise I played most.
@Ryanthe Slaya + ZenErik
here is the issue , supposedly Wii U fails or break even , let us not forget that Nintendo is a business and its looking to make a buck. If it finds that its too risky to enter the console market they won't , and lets not forget less money made on one console means smaller budget for developing the next console. If you are worried that Nintendo is going to shut down it probably will not. Sega is still around too , but I was talking about Nintendo getting out of the console market. Nintendo probably has a monopoly on handhelds by now , but looking into the future I am not sure how long that will hold. I just played Bastion on an iPad , it sells for $5 , its awesome and very convenient to carry your games IN the handheld. Its much better than to get a dedicated gaming device for $180 , buy games at $30 each , and have to carry the cartridges with you. Let us not forget the Android devices.
Some people here are dedicated gamers and cant see their future without dedicated gaming handhelds but you have to see the whole picture, how many people out there willing to continue to buy a dedicated hand-held gaming device to carry around. Yes I know not everyone owns an iphone, but I believe those who do are the same consumer category that are targeted to buy 3DS and games at $30 each.
May I include that Apple announced they sold 500 million iOS devices compared to 30m for the 3DS. I am not comparing sales numbers, I just want to point out that for a developer who is trying to make money , where do you think his eyes are? Even more , I believe iOS devices are more powerful than the 3DS. I can be wrong though...
Call me crazy but the only way I see Nintendo getting out of this is Nintendo creating their own "phone" device.
The above is my opinion it can be right or it can be wrong.
PC gaming is a different story. I can not comment about the era between PC's hey day in '98 up to '07 , but games failing on PC does not mean anything simply because the platform maker will always be around , in this case Microsoft. It does not hurt Microsoft if people do not play games full stop for 10 years. After 10 years they can pick up right off, on the opposite of Nintendo that depends ONLY on games if they do not make it in the gaming market its over for them. Also Microsoft does not really have a competitor in the PC world(they own like 85% of the market) on the opposite of Nintendo where Sony and Microsoft are eating their marketshare away(Excluding the individual case of the Wii) .
My speculation ? Nintendo's last console will be the one after the Wii U if they continue to walk the same path they are walking now without change.
