The upcoming Ys game is actually the fourth installment story-wise. So finish Oath in Felghana and play Book I&II (can be finished in a week) and you're all caught up.
How do you balance your playtime between "retro" & current?

In my eyes any "discontinued" system is retro. So basically PS2, GameCube, XBOX, and GBA are the most recent retro systems to me.ZenErik wrote:What do we consider retro, btw?
I'm aware it's a remake of Ys IV. Already finished Oath, I&II will get played as soon as I get through SMTIV and EarthBound.BoneSnapDeez wrote:@CavZee

And PSP and DS are still being made and thus not retro? Alright. Whatever works! Trying to think of the last retro game I played then... Would have to be DoDonPachi DaiOuJou for PS2, I think. But then again, there is also a port of that on the Xbox 360.CavZee wrote:In my eyes any "discontinued" system is retro. It's not really a black or white subject, that's just how I categorize it in my mind. I Also just got into the DS and PSP libraries within the past year so that probably affects my viewpoint as well. >_>ZenErik wrote:And PSP and DS are still being made and thus not retro? Alright. Re: How do you balance your playtime between "retro" & curre
I generally try to play games in a given series in order. This has little to do with "storyline" (most games don't have a coherent story to speak of) but more to see how the games changed over time in terms of design and gameplay.
I do occasionally hit roadblocks (it's gonna be damned hard for me to play through the Dragon Slayer series due to all the obscure Japan-only stuff - same goes for Legend of Heroes), but I try not to stress about it. I can always "skip" a game and come back to it whenever.
Oh, and Memories of Celceta is not a remake of either previously-released Ys IV (Mask of the Sun or Dawn of Ys - neither of which was actually developed by Falcom). It's a completely new game meant to replace Mask of the Sun in the Ys canon

Ah, so it's actually the first in-house version of Ys IV. Gotcha.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I generally try to play games in a given series in order. I really enjoy seeing how games and various series have evolved over the years as well. Combine that with the fact that there were always so many games I was aware of growing up but never got to play, and that is why I love spending time with old school games.

Re: How do you balance your playtime between "retro" & curre
In my case I tend not to do much of a balancing act regarding the play-time allocation between retro and current.
For me it's more a case of collect retro rather than allocate serious game-time to it, and play modern rather than invest seriously in collecting it.
Not entirely the case but that's mostly what I end up doing.
I guess I'm a bit of an anomaly in that I enjoy talking about the older stuff, but my game-time is not really linked to that.
Edit: I see the post above me indicates a similar type of preference.

Re: How do you balance your playtime between "retro" & curre
I usually decide what games to play by genre - I'll play (and beat) a shooter one week, an RPG the next, a horror game, and then a platformer. That's usually the cycle, and it's worked well for me so far and helps keep me interested. I also go back and forth between games I've beaten in the past and ones I've never played. As far as which console I choose, I rarely consider sticking to one console and just play whatever looks interesting off the shelf. I'll get to em all eventually

Re: How do you balance your playtime between "retro" & curre
I haven't played an older game in quite a while, but a lot of the newer stuff I play is retro in style and design. For example, I like to play a lot of new 2d side scrollers like Dust: An Elysian Tail or Mark of the Ninja or the upcoming Dragon's Crown. I also will sometimes play re-releases of older games if it's an HD collection or a PSN/XBLA release with achievements/trophies and other perks. I'm interested, for example, in the remastered Ducktales game coming out
Keeping up with newer, non retro games is something I don't concern myself with as I personally find that many of the triple A games that the gaming community rave about every year really aren't all that great, or they are just old ideas recycled for the thousanth time. The Assassin's Creeds, Halos, GTAs, Bioshocks, etc. don't even register on my gaming radar any more. I guess that makes me a hipster
There are some exceptions though. I'm very excited about the new Batman game coming out this year. That's one blockbuster game that may be a day 1 purchase for me
