Wii owners at my work are testing my limits...

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

"Why would I want to buy De blob, it looks weird." etc....
The same could be said of anything. We're all probably guilty of enjoying and favoring some simple and stupid offshoot of a more grand and traditional passtime.

Show of hands; Who loved, or still would love to play dodge ball, but hates or never had any interest in any larger scale, finely tuned, "hardcore" sport?

Eh, just get a flashcart. There's practically no game on DS that's worth the retail price, but there's a lot of decent stuff on there. Games I'd pay $5 for if that were a realistic offer.

Oh man, so with you on that one. I once got politely asked to leave a game store once because I started ranting very vocally about all the idiots buying these fucking awful games for the Wii/DS, passing up games like Mario Galaxy or Zelda for fucking Spiderman or the masses of absolute dredge on the system. My fiancée tried to pacify me by diverting my attention to a game she was thinking about buying.

Another one was when Gamestation had the only Wiis in stock in town. My friend wanted one really badly. They had 2, but you could only buy them with the most absurd and disgusting bundle you could imagine. A choice of 'any' 3 full price games for the gobsmackingly expensive £299.99... :| I was like WTF?! £179.99 for the console... £119.97 for the games. How exactly is this a bundle?! We're paying 3p more than it costs to just buy the stuff on their own... The real kicker was that the choice of games was Smarty Pants, ninja bread man, a bunch of other shitty games and metroid prime 3. We asked if it was possible to just have some used games instead even if it just costs less, AKA losing out in the long run. No, we couldn't do that because they HAD to be new. WTF?! So my friend just grabbed any 2 games and MP3. Slapped £300 down and walked out with his Wii.

We walked back in 10 seconds later with the still sealed shitty games. They offered him, get this... £15 each on trade in. Despite them being 10 seconds old and still sealed. I enquired as to why this was. They don't offer much for trade in because they won't sell well in the used section. Oh but it's ok to just rape the consumer with unfair bundles just so you can make the absolute most of this cash cow? I asked to speak to a manager, nothing happened he just said, if you don't like it, take them elsewhere and we can guarantee you won't get as good a trade in as here.

Wait, that's not all. After the other Wii was sold while we were still in the shop. The staff calmly walked out, and put brand new copies of Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil 4 and Metal Slug: Anthology amongst other more desirable titles. I was absolutely fucking fuming. They fucking held out on premium titles purely because they knew that people wanted the wii so badly they would just take any shit they could. Sold absolute turds of games at full price knowing full well that they would never be able to sell those games at full price let alone shift the stock. My friend literally had to pull me out of the shop. I swear I would've jumped over the cash desk and punched the manager. He was such a sly fucking bastard.

I just couldn't do that to someone. I have severe moral issues with their business practices. I would probably cost the company in revenue just because I can't sell somebody a bad game. I just couldn't do that to somebody.

Same here. I'd be rude to the customer, but it's only to raise the chances that they get a GOOD game, get their money's worth, and remain a fan of games. Retailers seem to have no eye for the future. They want immediate sales, instead of insuring long term business with each individual customer. It's like they WANT to crash the entire fucking industry by selling garbage games at high prices to as many people as possible, and convincing them that there is nothing better out there. All that will do is make them do stop playing anything altogether, and look at gaming with a disgust for the rest of their lives.

Mozgus, I would love to stand next to the counter for your 10 minutes of employment at gaming retail. It would be pretty damn entertaining.

Precisely. The other side to that is that the customer is a dumbass. They don't know what they want, they don't know any product knowledge, they just want whatever is there, what ever screams loud enough at them from shelf. For non-gamers it's pretty scary in there. I'm pretty sure if you knew nothing about games and you went into a game store to buy a game. The first thing you would do is look for familiar sights. It's human nature. What happens in this case, the noob goes straight the licensed games because it's 'familiar' the big friendly spiderman on the front is something they recognise, this makes them feel safe in the big scary video game shop full of foreign sights and sounds.

Just like when you go abroad and people speak foreign languages and all the stores have foreign products you are not familiar with. What do you do? You look for the brands you recognise and then buy them. Exact same principle. The problem here is that the licensed stuff sucks. It cost very little to make, makes the most profit in the shortest possible time. This diverts revenue from better games purely because the noobs just don't recognise the 'brand' therefore have no reason to trust that it is any good.

We all know what happens to all the great, albeit unknown, original games don't we children?

That's a good point. I can't imagine what it's like for a non-gamer. For me, a gaming store is like a small and very familiar place. It takes me like a minute to scan my eyes over every single game on one wall of the store and immediately sort out the quality from the crap. In that time, my mind has taken note of a couple of titles that are quality and maybe caught sight of one or two rare or uncommon titles in the process. Next, my mind starts determining which ones are worth the sticker price and which ones aren't. Then I'll narrow things down to two or three games. That all takes like five minutes. Then I need half an hour to decide which one to buy

That's years of experience at work. Non-gamers just don't have that. While they're looking for familiar movie licenses, I'm looking for familiar franchises and well known companies. Those poor guys have to ask the guy at the counter for advice. We all know that's not always a good idea, but what choice does the non-gamer have?

I'm happy to say that I've encountered some rather knowledgeable employees at the Gamestops around me who give customers genuinely good advice. Unfortunately, some customers are such idiots that all that knowledge goes to waste. Some people just like buying crap. Just like some people think American Idol and reality tv shows are good television

I really have nothing against the employees at GameStop and their assistance (the managers is another story)... they do try to shove stupid gimmicks down your throat like pre-orders, member cards, magazines, guides... etc.

But 90% of the employees are genuine game loving people... they may not love the games I love, but most people don't love the games I love (come on, I LOVE Space Giraffe... there is something ill with me). But they still have their genre and the like it a lot. Shit I remember in 99' I was playing Panzer Dragoon Saga for my first time and the ONLY person I knew that had ever heard of it was some douche down at the game store.

He admitted though he would never suggest it to anyone. And I agree, I don't suggest it to anyone either. It's on the Saturn first off, already people gamer and non-gamer are hesitent. Saying Sega is like asking them to convert to Satanism. Then you say, oh and you have to play this RPG based on a rail-shooter, where you fly on dragons, it costs 100+ dollars if you're lucky, and though the game is awesome, it is very short, in a fake language, and you probably won't appreciate it unless you buy the other 2 games in the series, and then probably the 4th title on the XBOX which oh yeah costs you yet another pretty penny!

And in the end, it's an RPG that most RPG fans don't consider a full fledge RPG. And we all know most "customers" who are looking for help making a choice probably don't want to play RPG's, come on, if you play RPGs you probably already know what you want before you walk into the store. You Bethesda to stop raping Pipboy right fucking NOW!

-------------------
But then we have the Wii fans, I don't call these people gamers, they are Wii fans. I own a Wii, I'm not a Wii fan, I like my Wii, I'm not a Wii fan. No who is a Wii fan?

My Sister... and her husband... and all their friends. They are Wii fans!

You know the type, you come over to visit and your sister tells some schmuck there how much of a Video Game nerd you are. Now you are introduced to this guy, or group of kids, and they are sitting there showing everyone else how "good" they are at video games. Not just Wii titles, these Wii fans still own 360's and PS3's as well... but if you ask them to name a console before this generation the only answer you receive is "PS2???".

Immediately you are pestered for you enjoyment of Video Games, me I am an aspiring Game Designer and Programmer... so immediately they first want to know what games you enjoy.

"Well I'm a retro and puzzle gamer, I also enjoy a few sh-mups and RPGs. Some of my fav titles are Pikmin, Lumines, Rez, Ikaruga, PDS, etc etc"

"Whoooaaaa? You play teh Halooo?"

"Ummm, no."

"I'll kick your ass at Haloo's"

"Ummm, most likely."

"Heh, dude I'm a better gamer then the Video Game Nerd... I can beat him in Halos."

"Yey for you special man. I guess I'm gonna play some Wii with the other nut cases."

So now here I am stuck in front of a TV waiting for my turn on Guitar Hero as everyone else struggles through easy... I finally get my turn and wail through a couple tunes on Expert and then the MOST annoying part.

"Fucking show off, you're just a show off."

Sorry, I played this game, what do you expect me to do? Play on Easy??? Sorry, that isn't fun, I'm playing this for fun! Sorry if you can't beat me at the game, that isn't my fault and I'm not a show off for it. If you can't beat me, get better. Now if I was playing on expert standing backwards with my eyes closed and drinking a beer at the same time and gloating the whole time... K call me a show off, cause I'm showing off. But just because I PLAYED the game doesn't mean I'm a fucking show off. Fuck you.

"Aight prick, let's play Halooosssss, I'll kill you in that. You think you soooo good at Guitar Heros. Come on."

"Ummm, no."

"You're just afraid, lets put money on it."

"Ummm, no."

"Pussy."

"Ummm, k special boy, you have fun."

Sorry kids if I play games for that weird notion I like to call FUN. It's not a competition to me, I don't play games I dread not because I'm a pussy, I don't find them FUN. That's why I do this, it is FUN!!!!!!!!!! I don't think Halo is fun, just like you don't think solving the arc length of a progressive quartic bezier curve is fun.

And then there is the final group... the Sports gamers. I have nothing against sports games themselves, but I hate the blank stares I get when I tell these idiots I despise playing those games. As if the fact I can't enjoy sports means I hate sports. NO, I don't like playing sports! I hate the action of ME playing SPORTS. Not sports, I don't care about what the fuck you do with your free time, go whack a ball, or pretend to whack a ball in virtual space. I don't give a fuck... I don't like it.

And because I don't know what teams are in the latest version of Madden doesn't make me an idiot, and certainly doesn't lower my ability to be a gamer, or a Game Designer.

If I hear one more time, "You'll never make games if you don't even know what *Some sports title* is." I'll kill people!

Yeah, you're right, I'll never work for the grinding post called EA ever because I never played *Some sports title*. I'm kinda happy, working for EA to any game designer is the equivalent of working for a sweat shop!

*WARNING*
To those of you noticing that my gamerTag at the bottom of my posts and that Halo and Gears are the top 2 games played on my 360. Keep in mind I live in a house full of male gamers. We don't have tons of money so we have one Xbox Live Gold Subscription and just share it. It just so happens the camer card is on my account and my room mate Frank plays those 2 games 4 hours a day every day when he gets home from a long day of masonry.

Note further the next 3 titles rotate between Ikaruga, lumines, rez, zuma, and Space Giraffe. That's me! But I'm usually on my Sega Genesis more... I am retro, remember!

A while back, I bought JSRF and Sega GT 2002 for the Xbox in the two pack. The guy behind the counter there at EB joked, "The only reason people pay the $3.00 for that is for JSRF."

I answered "Yeah, really. I have both the prequels on the Dreamcast and I know exactly what you mean."

"I'm a huge Dreamcast fan!"

So that sparked a conversation that left my mom, the other employees, and the costomers in the dust. That's the only time off the internet that I've come across another real Dreamcast fan.

And why else do you think I'm crazy?

Personally there is millions of things about society that drive me bonkers and piss me off sending me into violent rages in my head. But I rarely act on them (there was that one time I strangled the foreign guy at a Mobil in Los Angeles, but that's just a fluke).

The thing is the really fun parts of society are a wonderful pay off. My sister and her friends are freakin' annoying and drive me absolutely nuts, but in the same respect it is exhilorating fun to hang out with them. They once dragged me out on a boat to this little island in the ocean where on Sundays tons of people just go and hang out and drink. It was awesome! I got a massive sun burn and partied all day long. I ran into some pricks who didn't like me and tried to start a few fights, but in the end it was damn good times!
