Translation: "We're gonna milk this for all it's worth."Oh, and the company also kindly hiked the price up to $9.99 / £6.99, which is a little more than SNES games usually cost on the Wii U Virtual Console service.
So why the price increase? Speaking to Destructoid, a Nintendo representative attempted to explain the situation:
- As for EarthBound, Nintendo sets prices in the Nintendo eShop and Virtual Console on a game-by-game basis. Different games will be offered at different prices.
Earthbound NOW available on Wii U VC!?

Nintendo comments on Earthbound's inflated pricing
Re: Earthbound NOW available on Wii U VC!?
Does anybody really mind though? It's a game/series people have been clamoring for Nintendo to acknowledge for 20 years. We finally get the game on VC, it gets a brand new trailer in the Nintendo Direct, the full guide gets released for free online and it's even optimized for the Wii U browser. Getting upset over a $2 price hike seems silly to me.Then again it's the internet, and I guess it's just WAY more fun to be negative.

I'm not sure if I'll buy this one or not but $10 is fair enough. Especially compared to the cart. I paid in the range of $100 for the cart only a few years back.

I only posted that half-jokingly, tbh. No offense taken.CavZee wrote:Does anybody really mind though? It's a game/series people have been clamoring for Nintendo to acknowledge for 20 years. Although, there is some truth to my "criticism". You can get FF VI and Chrono Trigger off of the Wii Virtual console for only $8. Those are technically better games in every aspect (better music, visuals, gameplay, story, etc) and they're cheaper.
I just thought it was a little funny when the Nintendo rep said they set prices on a "game-by-game basis". It's true. Look at the eshop and you'll find all the Nintendo-brand games carry a premium price compared to most other titles.
Honestly, EB at $10 doesn't bother me; what bothers me are those people that claim they're buying a Wii U specifically for Earthbound. (When the reality is you could purchase a real copy of EB and a Super Nintendo for less than the Wii U basic.)
Re: Earthbound NOW available on Wii U VC!?
Although Earthbound will 99% of the time look better on a WiiU than a SNES + cart for those of us that use HDTVs. Unless you're using a nice XRGB box or something similar.Opa Opa wrote:I only posted that half-jokingly, tbh. No offense taken.CavZee wrote:Does anybody really mind though? It's not that far fetched. If you buy an EB cart that is all you get. Getting a Wii U for EB also gets you a console for future library additions.Opa Opa wrote:I only posted that half-jokingly, tbh. I don't normally purchase VC games but this seemed like a no brainer for me. Bought it, and am enjoying it a lot. Never played it before now actually. Hope the series can make some kind of a comeback in some capacity.ZenErik wrote:I'm not sure if I'll buy this one or not but $10 is fair enough. Especially compared to the cart. This. I doubt anyone's seriously buying a Wii U only for Earthbound. They were probably already on the fence about getting one and Earthbound just sealed the deal for them.Jmustang1968 wrote:Its not that far fetched. If you buy an EB cart that is all you get. I think third parties set the prices themselves. I know some of Square's PS1 games are set higher than others for example.Opa Opa wrote:I only posted that half-jokingly, tbh. The only Nintendo games that I know of that cost more than usual would be the GameBoy Zelda games. Anyway, it's largely a non issue because the fans who want those games don't really mind the price because they want the game and Nintendo knows they'll pay that price.

Re: Earthbound NOW available on Wii U VC!?
did someone say that the Earthbound Wii U Virtual console version comes with a scanned official guide that you can read on your Wii U gamepad? how do you access it?
