Is that supposed to illustrate the "evolution" of metal? That chart is problematic in several ways.
- Why is "original hardcore" listed twice?
- Grindcore is stuck in a weird spot. As mentioned earlier, it was heavily influenced by crust and anarcho-punk, though you can't make sense of it on this chart.
- "Norwegian Black Metal" and "Swedish Death Metal" are not genres, though I guess those aren't terrible descriptors. I would have gone with second-wave black metal and melodic death metal.
- There needs to be a link from hardcore to metalcore. Early metalcore like Rorschach and Starkweather is heavily influenced by hardcore punk and metal.
- Doom metal is completely absent, as are its variants - traditional, death/doom, funeral, etc.
So yeah, I'd call that both inaccurate and incomplete. To be fair, I don't think it's easy or feasible to "map" out a musical genre anyway.
For the record, the Metal Archives does not accept glam stuff. Take that as you will.
BD, they'll accept anything that does in fact meet their standards for metal at some point in their career. Out of Hair metal, Motley Crue is one of the ones that is truly heavy metal at points.
And they gave Hank III a page listing all of his releases, considering his work under the Assjack, Arson Anthem, and 3 Bar Ranch labels.
Ah, apparently exceptions are made for some bands:
Mötley Crüe, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Scorpions and Rush (among a few examples) are not considered metal by some. Understandable, as their music and heaviness varied and was debatable at times. But what they sometimes lacked in "metalness", they made for in historical importance, and they are there to stay. That doesn't mean we're going to accept any glam or hippie rock bands though, and they are about as "borderline" as we are going to have.
They are exceptions. You might not agree. Tough shit.
In general though, glam is not accepted as far as I can tell.

Right, so just to get this straight: The Metal Archives can be used against my point-of-view, but not for it.
And Motley Crue is like the model hair metal band. Half of the other bands were trying to imitate them back then. So how do they get a free pass?

Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say that.
BurningDoom wrote:you're musicianship makes you a better expert at it than the rest of the metal community, right?
I don't know if I'm an expert, but yes, I would say that my years of playing metal would make me more knowledgeable on the subject than someone that is bringing up MTV documentaries and silly images.

Mayhem fest anyone? I'm so excited to finally see Amon Amarth, and there's some other cool bands too. I'm expecting to see more battle jackets this year than at Summer Slaughter
Metal isn't an attitude.
You guys should really check out mapofmetal.com . There's some crap, but the genres are much better laid out than that other chart.
Anyone picked up the most recent Aborted album ? I finally got it and it is incredible.

Yeah, Metal Archives is against your point of view. Their decisions on what is and isn't metal can be considered elitist. Hair metal is just questionable in some cases. I dunno what else to say.
I'm guessing they gave Crue a pass because it kinda started hair metal, so it has more of an influence from more traditional forms of metal. Or they just don't want to admit they like a hair metal band. One of the two.
Fine. At this point we're just arguing in circles anyways, and not getting anywhere on either side. So I agree to disagree. You say tom-Ay-to you say tom-ah-to.
But for the record, I'm not agreeing it isn't metal, I strongly feel it is.
Just a question for you guys- what percentage of your listening goes to metal? I'm just wondering, as looking around the best metal websites, there's a ton of people who only listen to metal, and I feel out of place. Liking the two main genres I do really seems kinda weird to me.
