Re: Some love for the Star Solder Series?
I just got Soldier Blade for PC Engine a couple weeks ago. I finally got to play it. It's a beast of a game.
Re: Some love for the Star Solder Series?
I got Final Soldier for the PC Engine a month ago and it is one fine specimen of a Shooter. I'm hoping to one day find an affordable copy of Soldier Blade and Super Star Soldier, if not, then i'll crack and get them on PSN. I also have Blazing Lazers being shipped, but i'm not sure if that counts...

Blazing Lazers wasn't Kaneko/Hudson like the Soldier series. It still has some of the caravan mode fun, but it does play a bit differently. Blazing Lazers/Gunhed is very much a mish-mash of Aleste and Star Soldier gameplay. I like it better than the Star Soldier games, certainly, though only by a bit.
Re: Some love for the Star Solder Series?
Well, only kinda sorta. The normal release of Gunhed/Blazing Lazers doesn't include the 2/5-minute caravan modes, they're only available on the special cartridge used in the game tournaments in Japan back in the day. As such, the cartridges are a bit rare and expensive. There's actually two on eBay at the moment, both going at ~$260. Seach for "Gunhed Special".marurun wrote:Blazing Lazers wasn't Kaneko/Hudson like the Soldier series. It still has some of the caravan mode fun, but it does play a bit differently.
Soldier Blade and Final Soldier have such special versions as well, but since the normal releases have the caravan modes included, there's no reason to pick those up unless you just want them just for the sake of collecting.
For some Star Soldier love, check out the movie Game King with some epic original Star Soldier action, featuring Takahashi Meijin himself.

Caravan modes are the most fun you can have in a shmup I've found.
Thanks to these two games. The N64 game, not so much.
