Game Store find in the Desert!

Post by jay_red »

This weekend my Wife, Cousin, and I drove to Las Vegas to attend the Evo Fighting Championship, on the way we found a store tucked away in a small drive through town called Barstow. We were on the last leg of the trip and decided to stop for lunch (we had been on the road since 5 am). While looking for a resturant, I spied a store called Game World, and planned on going there after eating. The outside did not give me high hopes for anything worth while inside, we even questioned if it was open, but I saw the door slightly open, and discovered a gem in the middle of the desert...

It was very small inside, but packed to the celing with games! Most systems were accounted for, everything was easy to find, and all prices were displayed clearly.

All the handheld stuff was in these cases, a very good selection!

These cases had what appeared to be sealed games, there were many good titles in it, I did not check to see if they were legit sealed though. Eahc side displayed games, I was not able to get pics of all the sides though.

There was one wall that was completly DVD's, thousands of them taking up an entire wall floor to celing. In the back where the register was (in a seperate partition of the store) there was hardware and controllers and such. Their prices were just ok, even on the high side, but for the location, you couldnt beat the selection and being able to get games right off the shelf.

I didnt even get pics of the PS2/Gamecube/xbox wall, it was the largest one with a ton of games. They also had a very large PS1 section, and a sad small Dreamcast section, that consisted of like 10 copies of Shenmue for $25 each haha.

Unfortunately not, I didn't have time to really dig through the selections, and the prices were not as good as I hoped. I am sure if I had more time to really search through I would have found some stuff.

It doesn't look like a high traffic location, and I doubt that the rent is very high.

I would expect the prices to be a little bit better...

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold

I think locating a game store in a desert is a pretty awkward decision, for I think not a lot of people will stop there, being located in a desert and all. Also, by the selection, I believe the store should definitely be located in the suburbs at the very least, considering how much money the owner has spent on all the games, DVDs and toys, and the population. Otherwise, still a pretty cool store!

Giant selection, but high-ish prices? Sounds similar to a place near me actually.

I think there's some sort of strategy to doing that, price stuff a tad on the high side so you keep more inventory available and have a larger selection, keeps customers coming back just to see what you have.

Not only that, you also have to deal with Grabloids.
