I imagine it's not just the packaging but the carrier that has an effect on the final damage.

maybe it's a carrier distinction? my amazon stuff comes UPS 9 times out of 10

soft cardboard box in a bubble envelope = bad idea no matter who ships it.

No mine was UPS. I think Popo is right, my wife said the carrier basically threw it at the front door.

My stuff is almost always shipped USPS. Except for last time, when I ordered 3 items and they shipped 1 UPS (in a box that was 6 times bigger than it needed to be) and 2 by Fedex Smartpost (in the bubble mailer).

Yeah, once you get beyond the boxes suitable for a small number of books the box sizes are few and far between, so you very frequently get a box that's far too big from a volume perspective, but the smaller boxes wouldn't fit your item.

God, I know way too much about packaging after spending 4 years writing software for those warehouse.
