Sharknado. “It’s exactly what you think it is—a tornado full of sharks,” Ward explains. “That movie cannot be bad.”

Ugh, The Asylum. These guys make movies with amusing sounding names but the final product is almost always a joyless unwatchable pile of cinematic vomit. I like cheesy movies and low-budget weirdness, but The Asylum is just painful for me.

Maybe they've improved in recent years, but I don't want to waste my time trying to find out.

I firmly believe that the Asylum makes movies for a single purpose/situation. And that situation is "the mom whos buying the movie for her kid/husband and doesn't take the extra minute to read the box."

Example: TransMORPHers. Clearly a knockoff of Transformers. (same with Transmorphers 2 Fall of Man)

Mom goes into video store and little Billy said he wanted the Transformers movie on DVD. She goes in and sees Transmorphers, for $5. "Oh, thats the one that Billy wants."

Boom. Mission accomplished.

Though I think the extreme lack of creativity in knock-off-names on their part is somewhat creative/funny.

"The Day the Earth Stopped"
"Alien versus Hunter"

lol, gotta hand it to them. They know they're shitpeddlers, and they don't care.

I am sure retrodude will disagree, but I recall reading that the "Transmorpher" movies were actually better than their big budget counterparts. The same goes for "The Day the Earth Stopped" and the big-budget remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still". (The Asylum's films apparently fare less well in a fair fight; "Paranormal Entity" is supposedly inferior to "Paranormal Activity" by a wide margin.)

That said, I read that a lot of people really enjoyed "Sharknado", and I may try to see it at some point when I have had entirely too much to drink.

EDIT: Here is a fun article:

http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/dvde ... ntity.html

DOUBLE EDIT:

Also, this may be the best correction of all time...

"Correction, May 10, 2010: This article originally stated that the Asylum cleared a $5 million profit in 2009. The article also originally contained a joke that was similar to one in a Wired article about Asylum that was published in December 2009. The Slate article described $5 million as "roughly equal to Liam Neeson's hair-extension budget for Clash of the Titans but pretty impressive given the company's fringe position in the industry." The Wired article stated that $5 million "would barely cover Michael Bay's volumizer per diem but enough to make Asylum a reliably healthy business." ( Return to the corrected sentence.)"

My favorite mockbuster from The Asylum is probably TERMINATORS

(note: I've never watched any of them)

Asylum movies are GREAT bad movie night fodder. I haven't seen Almighty Thor (or maybe its just Mighty Thor) but I remember the trailer featuring Thor running with an Uzi.

I thought to myself - I'm watching that movie at some point.
