I can only compare the question to the Comic book boom of the early 90's. My dad was into it because he had a lot of old comics in storage from when he was a kid that his grandfather bought him. He continued to collect and read through the 70's and 80's then out of nowhere some of his books were worth hundreds. These days comics are not worth the same unless you have NM conditions of really really vintage comics.

Thats the thing though. Humans have a nature to "collect". I have a vast CD collection of easily over 1000 cd's. They are not worth anything as far as $$$ is concerned but down the road, when cd's are obsolete they could be worth something. Im not banking my future on it, but if it can help with my kids or future grandkids then thats great. I personally am not trying to make a buck off this.

To answer the question of the OP, I guess people think that having old video games and other forms of media are going to boom one day. They may be correct but from looking at the Comic Collectors POV. . it'll be a while before the SMB/DuckHunt Cart will be $500 in box.
