I suppose that's true - I am trying to think of counter examples and am coming up empty.

Still, would you not agree that the discriminatory practices they engage in are illegal for almost any other govt or govt-funded organization to engage in? They seem to be this one floating exception.

It already has sir. That's why I separated it. Just waiting for it to die or get back up as a zombie so I can shoot it in the head.

Discrimination law is confused to say the least...Here is one article from a very good law firm reporting on a case attempting to answer the question:

This is not even close to my areas of expertise...but it is my understanding that homosexuals are not a constitutionally-protected class, and any restrictions on discriminating against them are the products of state law. I am also fairly certain that blatant discrimination against homosexuals is still legal in a large number of states. (In fact, the recent repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy shows that the federal government discriminated against them until very recently, and I am not certain that it is in any way prohibited from doing so again.)

.....

Also...I will throw in my support for a Boy Scout Altered Beast hack.

I went from 2nd grade all the way through Eagle Scout and would never take that experience away. I developed so many personal and professional skills I use on a daily basis that I would not have received to the same degree otherwise. I developed into a leader who can teach others, a skill I use at work everyday.

Zombie Eagle Scouts.

Now that is a scary thought. Plus they're armed with flint and Swiss Army knives.

I personally prefer that the BSA stays funded by private right-wing groups or churches and takes government money simultaneously so everyone has something to be pissed off about when they make an official decision on anything that's highly politicized.

I was in girl scouts growing up and learned many valuable lessons about life from my scout leader like don't judge a book by its cover. She was gay and you would have never known there were 30+girls in our troop and there was never any hint of impropierty with us. I find some of the comments that have been spewed retarded that all gay leaders would be a danger to kids much less pediphiles. I know a few gay, lesbian and bi people and none of them are atrracted to kids 2 of them work with kids one is a little league coach the other is 1st grade teacher. I belive if you want to volunteer for boy or girl scouts and freely submit to a backround check and pass then that and your qualifactions are all that should matter otherwise you exclude alot of wonderful people who could give back to the community.
