Must Play PS2 Games?

Post by Jamisonia »

Always being a Nintendo fanboy, I've been recently getting into the PS3 and PS2. I'm looking for must play PS2 games that do not have HD re-releases on the PS3. The problem when searching lists so far is all the best games seem to have HD releases.

So far I have:

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness
GTA: San Andreas and Vice City
MegaMan X7

What else should I be looking at?

I'm a few years back on gaming, so some of these games have an HD release, but I tihnk they're worth it for the PS2.

Shadow of the Colossus
ICO
Rule of Rose
Shadow Hearts series
NHL 2002
Yakuza series
God of War series
Final Fantasy X
Devil May Cry series
Tekken Tag
Ace Combat 4
.Hack series

The Shin Megami Tensei games do not have ports yet to my knowledge. (The real SMT games; not Persona). And they've reprinted them so you can get them all on the cheap, brand new.

Siren and Echo Night: Beyond are some good games if you're into horror titles.

The Bouncer is one of my personal favorites. It's one of the really early PS2 titles. The Bouncer is a 3D beat-em-up. The voice acting is cheesy and the story is dumb but that's why I like it.

And you can't go wrong with FF XII, Katamari Damacy, or Dragon Quest VIII.

Also, the PlayStation 2 has really great games that you can still get brand new and cheap if you don't mind Greatest Hits editions.

Is there any reason to play the originals of some of these PS2 games instead of the PS3 HD versions?

It seems specifically the Silent Hill HD Collection was really messed up from the start. Though patched now, it seems like there are still significant differences, that would make one want to play the PS2 version instead.

I'd probably stay away from Silent Hill just in case, but i haven't looked into what updates it got.

I think Ico is fine to play on either platform. Shadows of Colossus is probably better on PS3, because the PS2 version has some framerate issues which holds the game back a bit.

I'd probably get the MGS collection since it also comes with Peace Walker and Metal Gear 2.

Anything else, I'd just look at some quick reviews. Should be able to tell if the HD remasters are accurate ports of their older counter parts.

I personally wouldn't recommend Megaman X7.

I'd look into the Victorious Boxer series, it's pretty awesome. It's based on a manga called Hajime No Ippo and it's very obscure, but not expensive (last I checked).

If you're into fighting games, there is the Fate Stay Night game and the PS2 version of Soul Calibur 2.

The NBA Street Games were pretty awesome back then too, not sure how they'd hold up now but probably worth a look.

Burnout 3 was all the rage back in the day, it has multiple ports but the PS2 version is fine. While on the topic of racers, there's always Gran Turismo 3 and 4.

Dragon Warrior 8 was one of the most praised RPGs, not sure if it has had a re-release yet.

Ace Combat 5
Fatal Frame I, II, III
Valkyrie Profile 2
Sly 2 (also on PS3)

Except for Fatal Frame, those are all pretty cheap and they're some of the best the PS2 has to offer.
Tsun tsun dere tsun dere tsun tsun~ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . UPDATED trade list
