An overreaction? Probably. Violation of civil liberties? Maybe. But look at it from the cops' perspective for a second. If they were made aware of the post, decided to ignore it because they thought it was a joke, and then it turned out not to be a joke, you better believe people would be screaming for them to be fired because they could have done something and they didn't. This is the world we live in now. It sucks, absolutely it does, but whether we like it or not, if there's even a microscopic chance that a joke like that might not be a joke, the police have a duty to investigate, just to be sure. If the kid's lawyer is any good, he should be able to get the frankly ludicrous charges thrown out, as they should be. But let's be honest, after so many mass shootings in such a short span of time, jokes like that are not only grossly insensitive, but they are, in effect, the modern equivalent of shouting "fire" in a crowded theater (disgusting pun not intended). I believe in freedom of speech as an absolute, but in cases like this, I think erring on the side of caution is more than justified.

I feel the same way. I'm not a huge fan of cops in general, but the cops basically did their jobs. Like you said it was an over reaction. But why take a chance? And I have to say, in the state that our country is in (high alert for just about anything) the guy should have really thought ahead before saying something, even if it was a joke, and even if he has the first Amendment right to say what he pleases.

It sucks the kid was taken into custody even thought it was clear he wasn't serious. I had an argument with a buddy of mine (the same guy that thinks 'murika is falling because of that vid with the kid and the DUI stop). He was rallying and crying the sky was falling because this kid's first amendment right was being violated and what not.

Yeah, maybe dude. That may be the case. But why would you say something like that? Think about what you're going to say. Don't put yourself in that position. Poor kid made an honest, dumb mistake. No arguing against that. But because he put himself in that position (much like the dumb bastard that refused to roll down his window) he had to endure some terrible things.

I was worried he was going to White Men Cant Jump the movie. But I saw the trailer today, and it actually looks like it might be pretty good. Brolin's character is even named Doucet, which is kinda sorta close to Oh Dae Su from the Korean version.

I have yet to read the manga though. I heard Lee's version follows it more closely.

those kind of passe attitudes about rights allow police over reach to persist and flourish unchecked. not all cops are good cops or even good at their job.

I don't see this as police overreach or a violation of his rights. And I think it's a good lesson to everyone that you don't have license to say whatever you want, whenever you want.

I always thought it was you can say what you want but you are going to be held accountable for what you say. I mean you can't walk into a bank and yell give me all the money in the vault and not expect to get in trouble.

arresting, detaining, questioning, searching = absolutely

detaining for 6 months, setting bail at 500K = over reach

I suppose that's more "justice system over reach" than "cop over reach", but still...

Ah I see your point wasn't really aware of the details besides what he did and how ridiculous of an amount for bail that was.

So was he even charged with anything? I really don't feel like reading up on this story. I will say that threats like this have been made before but it almost seems like someone wanted to make an example out of him.

Yeah, I am on this page.

I'm sure a few minutes of questioning and even a house search would make it pretty clear whether or not there is an actual threat there. Locking someone up for a stupid facebook comment for 6 months+ is borderline ridiculous, if not terrifying. Makes me think of something that would happen in the Middle East, not here.

And I'm not saying it shouldn't have been investigated, or that you can say whatever you want on facebook (pretty much the absolute worst place to say stuff), but this screams overkill to me.

I'd argue he probably should have spent a night in the drunk tank, but I'll agree that the length of detainment and amount of bail was silly.
