What you said to the officer was neither respectful, nor displays a sense of humor, and has no ring of truth. You curse at an officer, he won't laugh, unless again if you live in Bizzaro world. And if a cop thought you had drugs on your person, in no way would he ever allow you to grab for said package; in fact you would have been pulled out of the vehicle so he could build his case.flex wood wrote: I dunno maybe I'm better at sizing up situations then you are and know what I can get away with? I refuse to let myself be intimidated by a uniform so I just act like I would with anyone I don't know, respectful while having a sense of humor.
Nothing personal, it's just that your story makes as much sense as Spike Lee remaking Oldboy.

Wow well at least you're not a copLuke wrote:What you said to the officer was neither respectful, nor displays a sense of humor, and has no ring of truth. The cop knew I was grabbing for my id and I knew I had what was going to look like drugs. I knew that there was nothing to avoid him from seeing so instead of trying to hide it or being the idiot that just says "it's ok it's just dog treats" I played it off. The idea of a cop attempting to pull someone from a car with their hand in a backpack is just stupid and probably one of the first things they would be told not to do in the academy.
Do you have any first hand experience of being pulled over on serious felony charges? Because if you don't I fail to see how you would have any idea what cops do and don't do in those situations besides what you've seen on TV.
I was pulled over last night as a suspect in a possible breaking and entering and whatever else he might have thought happened since he hadn't even been to check the alarm yet. I knew from how he approached the car and the way he said what he said to me that he thought it had nothing to do with me. Hence I swore and we chuckled.
I've had to deal with stuff like this about once every two months since I was about 14. I've gotten cops to help me lift floor buffers after just calmly walking down a dark alley and explaining that I'm working and don't have time to sit and chat. I've also dealt with cops responding to alarms, in buildings I'm working in, and told them if they want to be dicks they can f off and wait for the building owner if they want to treat me like a suspect when I'm the only person with a master key within an hours drive.
I know what I can get away with. Very different from knowing that I did nothing wrong and acting smug at a check point Luke.

Smile: Justin Carter is out on bail.
Ticked: the fact he was arrested over a sarcastic facebook post in the first place.

So by your own calculation, you've dealt with the police at least 84 times since you were the age of fourteen.
Very well then.

An overreaction? Probably. Violation of civil liberties? Maybe. But look at it from the cops' perspective for a second. If they were made aware of the post, decided to ignore it because they thought it was a joke, and then it turned out not to be a joke, you better believe people would be screaming for them to be fired because they could have done something and they didn't. This is the world we live in now. It sucks, absolutely it does, but whether we like it or not, if there's even a microscopic chance that a joke like that might not be a joke, the police have a duty to investigate, just to be sure. If the kid's lawyer is any good, he should be able to get the frankly ludicrous charges thrown out, as they should be. But let's be honest, after so many mass shootings in such a short span of time, jokes like that are not only grossly insensitive, but they are, in effect, the modern equivalent of shouting "fire" in a crowded theater (disgusting pun not intended). I believe in freedom of speech as an absolute, but in cases like this, I think erring on the side of caution is more than justified.
