The Valis action-platformer series is pretty solid.

There are four main titles. Each game has multiple/ports and remakes.

Valis II also features a remake where the characters have all been transformed into a "super deformed" style (cute small characters with huge heads). The game was called SD Valis in Japan, with the SD standing for super deformed. The title was mistranslated when brought to the US where it was called Syd of Valis. The main character, Yuko, was even renamed Syd. Bizarre.

Valis IV was released towards the end of the 16-bit era. It was the last we'd see of these games until it was resurrected as a hentai series in 2006. There are five Valis X hentai titles.

The Xak series by Microcabin. Some of the best action RPGs of all time (after Ys of course).

Xak - The Art of Visual Stage
Fray In Magical Adventure (spin-off starring a character named Fray)
Xak II - The Rising of the Redmoon
Xak - The Tower of Gazzel
Xak I + II (compilation of the first two games with an "intermission" between them, much like Ys Book I & II)
Xak III - The Eternal Recurrence
Tower of Cabin - Cabin Panic (not exactly a Xak game, but a game starring many various Microcabin characters - much like Segagaga)

Speaking of Microcabin, the RPG Riglord Saga was released in the US under two different titles (both for the Saturn): Blazing Heroes and Mystaria: The Realms of Lore. There's also a Japan-only Riglord Saga 2, also for Saturn.

But Mystic Ark: Maboroshi Gekijo, whatever that is? Totally new to me! Time to go look it up!

I am a huge 7th Saga/Mystic Ark fan myself, but also know little of this third game.

There's very little information about it on the web, not even a single fan review on its GameFAQs page. From what I know, the PS1 isn't the most import-friendly console and I doubt we'll ever see a fan translation.

Exed, you only scratched the surface. The Kunio-kun series is really really huge and really really awesome.

Bomberman GB 3 (JPN) was never released in Europe or North America...

EDIT: Also...Bomberboy (JPN) = Atomic Punk (NTSC) = Dynablaster (PAL)...and, with regard to the NES versions, Dynablaster (PAL) = Bomberman II (JPN/NTSC). (Apparently, the NES version of Bomberman was never released in Europe.)

Checking the Japanese wiki page for it, it seems it's an 'action adventure' game with no direct relation to the original Mystic Ark.

Story:

While celebrating 100 years since its foundation, a small port town comes upon strange events. A band of entertainers arrive in town, led by a man who goes by, "Mr Silver Fingertips." (Not even joking--.)

The children who received fliers for the show were swept up in the excitement and anticipation all day long. However, even as the children received these fliers, there was not even an appearance of a stage being built. To dispel the townspeople's unease, the crow-headed leader made the rounds with fliers in hand, assuring them that the show would be coming.

One evening, Silver Fingertips called out to our main character. Next thing he knew, he was standing on the stage of the Illusion Theater.

Interesting. Most American websites claim is has some relation, or that it's the third part of the "series". Then again, the original Mystic Ark isn't much like The 7th Saga at all.

I found some YouTube vids and damn does the gameplay look weird.

Oh, I meant no direct relation in terms of story, and probably gameplay. It is a follow up to Mystic Ark on the SFC.

Ah okay maybe I should have read that webpage you linked. My Japanese is shoddy but I can make this out well enough.

You know I never thought to look for info about games on Japanese websites. Seems like a good idea for some of the more obscure stuff.
