Been said before, the Thrift Store and Swap Meet are the best places to find a Hidden Gem game on the cheap. For an old PC game, Grim Fandango commands high prices online, even more so as a CIB big box.

Oooh yeah, Grim Fandango is a unique game! The world is one of a kind with great dialog. Instead of a mouse, this adventure explore game plays with a keyboard or a gamepad. For me, this allows a more closer interaction of the game character on the screen.
A Windows 95 game, Grim Fandango works just fine in Windows XP and Windows 7 64 bit as well with the right installer. There are programs to fully install this game so the CDs can be put away.chili_dog wrote:http://8th-circuit.com/content/flashbac ... m-fandango
Grim Fandango was both the first and one of the last adventure games made by Lucasarts to be made in 3D. While Grim Fandango is often considered a critical success, and remembered fondly by those who have played it, at the time it was considered a commercial failure. Many have since marked the failure of Grim Fandango (which cost a then-impressive $3 Million dollars to make), as one of the biggest signs that the golden age of adventure games was dead.
The game is a strange mix of Spanish/Mexican mythology and Noir, but it somehow fits together better than it sounds like it would. This is reflected in the art direction of the game, which is absolutely gorgeous and doesn’t suffer at all for its age. It is easily one of the highest points of the game, which is good because you’ll probably be staring at puzzles and objects and scenery for a long time while trying to figure out what to do next.
If anything is a barrier to entrance it’ll be the way the game handles, and beyond that some might be turned off by the difficult and bizarre nature of the puzzles. But if you can get past those hindrances, the game has one of the most unique and genuinely interesting stories I’ve ever played. Not to mention some of the funniest lines I’ve ever heard. There’s certainly a wealth of good stuff here, it’s just a matter of wading through to get to it. In the end, it’s well worth the effort.

Interesting that the game manual shows a picture of all things, a CH Flightstick inside as one of the control options. Even though Grim Fandango supports various Joysticks and Gamepads, I found the button mapping needed some changes. No worries, I simply disabled the game controller in the game and configured the keyboard commands to the gamepad via Joy2Keys. This allowed me to customize the buttons of the gamepad to a better layout.
Opening the box revealed a very sweet bonus. A Prima Game Guide of Grim Fandango hidden inside! This book normally is not included with the game, nice that Prima designed their book to fit inside the original game box.
With the closure of Lucas Arts, this game certainly will go up in value. Oh, it is also hilarious and fun to play! This is my second copy, now armed with the new 64 bit launchers I am rediscovering this "Film Noir" game on the Win 7 laptop for a portable diversion, no CDs needed after the initial install.
