In reality it isn't a cyst but an abcess.

Yup, a pilonidal cyst. Fun it certainly was not. Just consider yourself lucky that yours was/is in a more manageable location. When I had mine, I found out that a few people I know have had them in the past (they're apparently common, especially with hairy men but women can get them as well). All on their backs tho. I was the only one to have it on my ass. Living with it was bad enough, but the recovery from surgery was rough. I was out for 3 weeks with a huge wound on my ass and 3 or 4 staples up my crack. Yes, STAPLES! The first time I saw the open wound I remember thinking, "Holy shit, typically you would go to the hospital if you saw this but I just came from the hospital!"

So yours came back? I was told when I had it removed that there was a chance of it coming back, and that has been my fear ever since. I wouldn't wish it on ANY one.

Staples? This surgery wound isn't supposed to be closed up but left to heal open air.

It seems the disease isn't as associated with hair as originally thought. It is more of an antomy issue by having a deep clefted tailbone and some sort of trauma or prolonged sitting on it. They called it jeep disease from WW2 from thinking soldiers were getting it from hard jeep seats.

Yup, staples.

The part that was the cyst itself was left open to heal. It actually needs to be left open because it still drains for a while even after it's removed. When I went back for my third post op, my surgeon decided it healed and closed too quickly and still needed to drain so he had to open it back up a little. THAT fucking hurt.

The staples were for these little holes that feed the cyst, I forget their actual medical term. I also had the cyst channel under the skin to a point right at the top of my crack where it would drain from. They were all cut out and then stapled shut. So I had 3 or 4 very uncomfortable staples up my crack for about 3 weeks. Getting them removed wasn't too fun either. I remember hearing them slam down on the medical tray, it sounded like bullets lol. But the day they were removed was one of the best days of my life.

Honestly, the only thing that made my time after the surgery bearable was the pain medication they gave me. Some people say, "Why does pain medication have to make you high - can't it just numb the pain?" Clearly these people were never in any kind of pain that was also accompanied by an all around rough time, like not being able to sit on your ass or sleep on your back for three weeks. Being a little high helps you not care so much. Not that I abused them, but I definitely loved them.
