Systems Really worth having.

Post by Tweekers237 »

Ive owned about every successful system since NES. I kept all my stuff but sadly I lost just about everything in a major flood 3 years back. Games,Systems and accessories all gone. It was pretty sad but I took it on the chin. I wasn't playing the stuff but I was keeping it because they were all mine and I was the original owner.

As time passed, Im not the gamer I used to be and in the digital age you can get everything for free. I personally enjoy the physical representation. CD's, DVD's, Games, Records. . .I enjoy it all. Im not even a collector but there are some things that I just enjoy having.

For whatever reason, Im looking to start a Videogame collection. By the graces of based God the only major thing that survived the flood was my original NES with the Gold Zelda inserted. Is it a sign?!?

Anyway, I have no intention of owning every major system. NES, Genesis(maybe go all out with Sega CD and 32X attachments) SNES and Dreamcast is where Im focusing my effort.

Can you guys help with what you think would be some good additions? Systems just to have to say "I got that, wanna play a few games". Ill probably start a game room when I buy a house. My girl is an 80's chick and we have been using the NES and she got me about 20 carts for my Bday. Shes a big Pinball person and wouldn't mind having a few of those but $$$$$. Im gonna repair the system too so i have an interest in restoration also.

Thanx guys and girls.

It depends on what games you want to play. I can't understanding gaming without a well-working computer.

The most popular and well rounded consoles seem to be:

NES
Megadrive
SNES
Dreamcast
PS2

Owning, say, a Saturn or N64 is much rarer and fewer people are into them.

If you are going for bare essentials, I'd probably not include the Dreamcast. The others were wildly successful/popular consoles.

I'd add the 2600.

Hm. So you have a working NES, and are looking at purchasing a Genesis, Sega CD (I'd skip the 32x) SNES, and Dreamcast, correct?

I would strongly suggest two systems that have great game libraries and are currently on the cheap: The Game Cube (or "the Crube" if you will) and the Playstation 2. If you only buy one of these, I'd lean towards the PS2.

I only have around sixty games for the PS2, and should have at least one hundred because I'm sure there are hundreds of great games for the console that refused to die.

From what I've gathered from your post, you are at the stage where buying a console for one game (say buying an N64 only for OOT) doesn't make sense. Search ye out consoles with libraries of games you enjoy.

Funfact about the Ps2 library, it's got more domestic releases than the entire SNES and Genesis domestic release libraries combined. Plus a Ps2 would give you access to the Ps1's nice library as well.

If you're considering a GameCube, unless you mainly want it for the Game Boy Player I'd just hunt down a backwards-compatible Wii instead. After all, the Wii has a solid library of its own, and you can nab Virtual Console stuff too while the service is still active for those consoles that probably don't have enough games to warrant you getting (Sega Master System, Turbografx-16, and Nintendo 64 come to mind.)

Well seems you've got 8bit (NES), 16bit (Gen/SNES) and then a Dreamcast. So you're kind of skipping over PS1/Saturn era. (I cannot in good conscience recommend an N64). So you might want to check for a PS1 or Saturn. Saturn is brilliant for arcadey kind of stuff. But it's also a really expensive console to collect for compared to PS1 unless you plan to do a a lot of importing. PS1 is definitely a lot cheaper to collect for, and you'll most likely have a lot more luck funding PS1 games in the wild.

EDIT: And as others pointed out, probably smarter to get a PS2 so that you can just get access to the combined (and staggeringly awesome) PS1 & PS2 libraries.

A GameCube is a good idea too if you want to have access to GB/GBC/GBA on your TV. Otherwise you could consider a Wii for GCN support and also have access to the Virtual Console.

NES, Genesis, and SNES are the three essentials in my mind.

If you want to do any pre-NES gaming I'd look at an Atari 7800, which will also play 2600 games.

I too feel like the NES, Genesis and SNES are the triumvirate of "must have" classic consoles.

I'm certainly not trying to put down the outlying ones like the Master System or the TurboGrafx-16/PC-Engine or say they're not worth having but as far as popularity in the west goes, those are the three juggernauts.

I'd only grab a 2600 or 7800 if you can appreciate them.

I don't think anyone would say that Turbografx or even Sega Saturn are must-have consoles. They're awesome, but their appeal is kinda niche
