Re: Need good Saturn games
You know, I waited years to play Nights and finally was able to last year. It's a cool game, but overall I wasn't THAT impressed by it. It's got a great visual style and the music is nice, but it's basically a score based game and getting a high score means looping through the same stage over and over until the time almost runs out and pretty much doing the same tricks over and over again. It seemed kind of repetitive to me.

In fact you DON'T need the 3D controller to play Nights, it just makes for smoother control. And indeed, the gameplay in Nights is two-dimensional. The stick helps because you do lots of loop-de-loops and such that require rolling your thumb around, and with a D-Pad that starts to hurt after awhile.

Virtual On is a really great mech combat game. I remember playing it in the arcade and having a blast, so I had to pick it up when I got my Saturn.
Then there's the obvious choices, like Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Force III.

Finally, someone else said it. NIGHTS was good, but really, I don't see what all the hoopla is about. It isn't that great, and I can think of quite a few other games for the Saturn (Astal, Rayman, Mr. Bones) that are better. I think maybe its just gotten a reputation because its only available on the Saturn. Had it been a PS game, I think it would have been appreciated, then quietly forgotten. Still, worth playing at least once if you have a Saturn.Gamerforlife wrote:You know, I waited years to play Nights and finally was able to last year. I'm going to throw out a vote for Virtua Fighter Kids. I know, its old, and the graphics aren't amazing, but for a Saturn game, it rocks. I recently won an ebay auction with about 7 fighting games, and I really think its the best of the lost 3D-wise. It controllers the same as VF2, but its fun to watch the kid versions of all the characters beat the living crap out of each other. Not too expensive, either. If you want a 3D fighting game for the Saturn, then you could do worse. I find the novelty makes up for the sting of early 3D graphics. And its a heck of a lot better than Battle Areana.

Also you do not need a memory card you just need a new battery for your backup memory built in. I would suggest buying a 4 in 1 Action Replay Plus.

Shining Force III. ... Someone had to say it.
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games
Re: Need good Saturn games
Mr. Bones is great. D is pretty entertaining if you like point-and-click games. If you've never played the original Tomb Raider the Saturn version is as good as any. Sega Rally plays great. Virtua Cop is a lot of fun if you also have a light gun.

Dragon Force. It's the only game I've been playing lately, but be forewarned it's addictive.

pshh, it looks ok, but it's no metal warriors!Ack wrote:Man, you guys always leave out the awesomeness that is Cyberbots. 2D mech combat for the win!
Anyways, everyone whose recommending x4... why? The game is a gigantic disappointment. I've recently been making my way through the entire series and I can comfortably say that it is the worst mega man x out of the five I've played. Level design, music, boss battles... well they all pale in comparison to previous iterations. I'd definitely avoid it. X3... maybe, but you should play it on the snes if you can, the old school sound effects and untampered with soundtrack are better than the "enhanced" ones found in the Saturn version.
Enough ranting though, Out of the saturn games I've recently acquired the ones I've enjoyed the most are the light gun shooters (house of the dead and the virtua cops) Virtua on (though the dreamcast version is superior), Mr. Bones (so underated it's criminal), Burning Rangers, Shinning force III (though if you like alot of depth to your strat-rpgs, this one may not cater to you as much as ff-tactics), and Guardian heroes. Hope that helps.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?
