I watched The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes yesterday. It's a mostly live-action feature film by The Brothers Quay, who are mostly known for their stop-motion short films. They made another feature called Institude Benjamenta but I've never seen that.

I thought that it was visually fascinating and has really interesting sound design, but just becomes BORING. The characters and story aren't engaging enough to keep my interest held for over 90 minutes. I feel like if I saw it when I was still a teenager I would have pretend to like more than I actually would. Like Jan Svankmajer's Alice.
I think it's still worth watching for fans of stop-motion animation and people who eat up visual artistry for its own sake, but it isn't something I'd want to put on for fun.

FTFY. When I saw it today, the house was absolutely PACKED with old timers (as I suspected it would be) and they had a blast. I gotta say, their enthusiasm was infectious and I enjoyed it just as much as they did. Johnny Depp was brilliant as Tonto to the point that I would say he's the primary reason to see it. One thing, though:

Towards the end of the film, there's a big action sequence that, as soon as it begins, William Tell kicks in and plays underneath the entire scene. If you, as a viewer, find that too ridiculous for your taste, then this film is not for you. The whole movie is somewhat campy (presumably on purpose), but in this case, that approach works pretty well and enhances the film's charm rather than detracting from it.

EDIT: The film version of William Tell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LiaXIAwemk

The biggest plus, though, is that the movie just feels like classic, old-school Disney magic, so if you're a fan of that, then definitely check it out.
Spoiler that please as you are spoiling the entire finale.

Luke, you'll have to edit your post and spoiler it there too.

This is the End is probably the best movie I've seen in the theater this year.

You know, I rarely enjoy new comedies these days. They just all seem bland and not so funny. So it's a rare thing for me to really like a new comedy movie. But this was definitely it. I don't care that 50% of it was toilet humor, it made me laugh so hard so many times. And the story was actually great. They all must have had a blast making that film.

Movie spoiler, don't read if you haven't seen the movie yet:
My only complaint is that Cera died so early in the movie, I would've liked to have seen more of him. "Hey, can you tell me if this coke smells funny?" ::poof::

Oh I agree. I've lamented many times in this thread about the sad state of comedy film for the last decade or more. I roll my eyes at almost all of it. TITE was a refreshing surprise.

Yes. Comedy is comedy. Even if it's unintentional, it counts (although I haven't seen Crank, it did look remarkably silly, so I'll take your word for it).

Yes. Comedy is comedy.
No. It is an action film with comedy elements. If Crank is a comedy then so is almost every Tarantino film, zombie film, etc.

You've got to be fucking kidding me. If I read anything dumber than this post today, I will be astonished.
