See, this is what I was telling noise in PM. Just before Christmas-time, the XL's didn't sell - they came out $25-35 higher but a few weeks later were CHEAPER than the originals, about $150-170 and the originals were $160-180. At the time, I didn't have any of them, but I certainly questioned why the price on the original was remaining constant and the "new / improved / larger" version kept price dropping.

Not knowing and not seeing obvious differences in the store (aside from stylus placement, and larger screens) I assumed it was a screen size preference, but beyond that folks weren't seeing the allure to upgrading. The allure from a DSPhat to a DSlite was/is obvious.

I won't dispute battery life - I certainly think it stands to reason it lasts longer, but I haven't noticed. My kids nor I never play more than an hour or two in any sitting and recharge them long before they die. Never had an issue w/battery life on any of the DS models.

As for preference, i'm not the only one, just asked all 3 of my kids, and my 10yo and 5yo prefer the smaller for comfort, my 7yo prefers the larger for the bigger screen.

All things being equal, if the XL is in stock and the price difference is marginal >$20, get the XL, but I think the argument that it is FAR superior is more "bigger/newer is better" than actual substance. I mean, an extra hour on battery and stylus placement? Yeesh. Who plays for 5+ hours in between charging opportunities? And...once you have the stylus out, was it really that hard to find it? In fact, I think most games you (noise) and I like, don't use a stylus.

This thread is a painful reminder that I haven't purchased a handheld in well over a decade. Unless there is a mindblowing handheld out there, I'm happy with my GBA.

^ You decide to buy a system or not by the system itself, rather than the games available on it? Kinda odd.

Luke, you should get a 3DS. The GBA was/is a great system, being able to play all GB games up to that point. The 3DS also plays DS games, so with two systems you'd have access to the entire Nintendo handheld game library. I don't know what kind of games you're into, and I haven't read the "how many games does it take for you to buy a console" thread so I don't know if you have such a threshold, but surely between the entire DS library, the current 3DS library as well as the upcoming 3DS titles there must be enough games that interest you to warrant buying a 3DS. And just think, DS games are fairly cheap right now. If the Nintendo used game trend is that even popular common games go up and up in price, then that's a perfect reason to get into now.

Not until I catch up with a plain jane DS.

The only time I have to handheld game is when I have absolutely nothing else to do. It's a last resort to spare the boredom of sitting in a car or plane.

Love me some TMNT, Ducktales, Link's Awakening, the GBA Metroid games, but these days when I travel I usually prefer sleep over gaming. Plus there is a reason I love my GB pocket; it can fit in my pocket and I don't have to worry about damaging it if I sit on it. From what I'm hearing on this thread the 3DS seems a bit flimsy.

I simply don't need handhelds.

I like playing handhelds in bed at night. I think I have played my handhelds only 5-10% of the time max as an actual portable outside of the house type handheld. But this is why I typically only get unique experiences to the platform. Typically these have been in the form of good JRPGs.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I did too, when I was a kid.

When my head hits the pillow it's lights out. No tv, no reading, no games, just time for sleep (and perhaps a warm glass of milk).

On road trips where I am not driving, I'll burn through titles, but as soon as I get home I'm 100% console.

I didn't like handhelds as a kid, I didn't get into them until the DS.

I am a night person and usually dont go straight to sleep in bed. I like that wind down period (for lack of a better term). So it is either read a book or play a handheld.

I'd say that 90% of my handeld gaming is done (A) sitting on the couch next to my wife while she watches something I'm not into watching, or (B) laying in bed next to my wife while she reads a book. So I get JM's stance.

Hey Luke,

Once you have a kid 75% of your gaming is gonna be on handhelds.

As far as the 3ds/3ds XL argument goes, I personally would like to have an XL, but I've been perfectly happy with my regular 3DS, which I've had for about half a year now. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Maybe it's cause I'm not that fussy, but it doesn't even bother me at all playing a Vita game and then picking up my regular 3DS to play something that's on a smaller screen.

If you can get an XL, go for it. If you don't want to wait, just get a regular one. It's like the choice between awesome and more awesome. There's no wrong choice
