Well, seems a moot point, but I will +1 the XL as well. Definitely worth it and much preferred.

You should get PS+, I love it as well. Free downloaded games, many of which are fairly new. I play my 3DS and Vita about the same.

I basically only play RPGs on the handhelds, as I prefer the action type games on the big screens.

recommended games for 3DS
Fire Emblem Awakening
Theatrhythm
My wife loved the OoT remake
Project X Zone looks promising but I havent tried it yet (you seem to like the mashup type games as I recall you liked Cross Edge and I know you enjoed Neptunias, so might be right up your alley)

DS
Puzzle Quest 1 & 2
Dragon Quest IV-VI
Radiant Historia
Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon (not as good as Awakening, but still fun game)
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (much better than the original)
Chrono Trigger (if you never played original, or if you have, a nice port/blast from the past)
Professor Layton games (my wife absolutely loved these and pre-ordered each one)

Zero Escape is also on 3DS.

I have an original 3DS because I wanted a modern handheld that would actually fit into my pocket and not get wrecked. It looks good, good enough for me. Maybe the XL does look better, but the standard model is not a disappointment. I play DS games on a DSi XL and I still didn't really mind going back to the small screen.

I'd recommend playing DS games on a regular DS. The 3DS uses a higher resolution screen, which is good, but the scaling is pretty horrible. 3D games look okay, but anything with detailed sprites or text is ruined. It's better to get a DS Lite for $25.

Also, don't neglect the eShop/dsiware exclusives. Some excellent ones:

Mighty Switch Force 1+2
Liberation Maiden
Gunman Clive
Link 'n' Launch
Pushmo
Crashmo
Crimson Shround
Dark Void Zero
Tsun tsun dere tsun dere tsun tsun~ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . UPDATED trade list

Agreed some games look perfectly fine while others get blurred too badly.

BUT!

When you boot up a DS game on the 3DS you have the option of blowing up the res or keeping it the same where the picture wont take up the entire screen. I couldn't imagine doing this on a regular size 3DS, but it's fine on the XL. Since the screens are larger, the smaller image is just about the same size as a regular size DS screen.

edit: typo

I really think you will regret getting the small 3DS. mjm is literally the only person I've ever seen say that they prefer the smaller version.

How long would you have to sit on credit for a XL to come in? It seems that even if it were a few weeks it would be well worth the delay...

Some more specialized DS suggestions:

Nanostray 1/2
Little Red Riding Hood Zombie BBQ
Retro Game Challenge
Space Invaders Extreme 1/2

I haven't seen Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Mutant Mudds, or Resident Evil Revelations mentioned in this thread yet, and that's a darn shame.

Also...

I just finished playing through Luigi's Mansion 2 last week. The single player was a lot of fun. I would definitely recommend it, I just don't know noise's taste.

I honestly don't see the allure. I suppose if I bought a lot of download games then it would be awesome to get free ones. But whenever I look at the list of games that PS+ guys are getting free, I'll be like 'oh cool! But I'd still rather own that one physically.'

I basically only play RPGs on the handhelds, as I prefer the action type games on the big screens.

Yup, as stated earlier this quasi-Namco X Capcom sequel being localized had a lot to do with finally pushing me over the 3DS edge.
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (much better than the original)
Well I love the original, so yeah should look into it.
Chrono Trigger (if you never played original, or if you have, a nice port/blast from the past)
Played a couple years ago on PS1. Liked it for a while. Got stuck. Gave up. I wouldn't mind giving it another go sometime though. And yeah, RPG's work better for me in portable form.

I don't know. I suppose I could try to find out if they have any order or anything. Like I said - I'd certainly prefer the XL, and if both were in stock then no real decision to be made. But if I have to sit around indefinitely on credit with no 3DS, then fuck that.
Nanostray 1/2
Little Red Riding Hood Zombie BBQ
Retro Game Challenge
Space Invaders Extreme 1/2
I've owned and enjoyed all the above except RGC which certainly looks like something I'd like.

Luigi's is up my alley as I love the original on GCN. Kid Icarus, not sure yet because of the weird stylus control thing, RE:R I'd rather get on a console. (WTF is Mutant Mudds?)

I ended up getting the small 3DS myself because I'm kinda a cheapass sometimes.

LOL. Just to give you a warning if you haven't read anything about Luigi's Mansion 2. I didn't, I basically dove into the game blind. I mean, I've played the first one, but I didn't read anything about the new one before playing it. Even though the GCN one is pretty linear, it still has that open exploration feel to it. The 3DS one does, too, but the game is broken up into levels. It's still loads of fun, and the actual gameplay is probably a lot better than the first one, but being broken up into levels has its downside. You're constantly reentering the same areas with a new task, and if you want to 100% the game you have to search everything. So you end up searching the same furniture and whatnot in the same rooms multiple times. That got annoying by the end of the game, IMO. But being broken up into levels also had its upside. All in all it's a great game that rivals the first one. That's just my one minor complaint I had with it.
