Well, in recent years I've gotten more into portable gaming. Something I ignored in most of my life (though I did own a Gameboy for a brief period when I was young)
A big change in maybe the last decade was me becoming something of a collector. I used to be a hoarder for years, just buying tons of games but never caring about things like condition or CIB and things like that. It's just a shift in thinking that occurred when I becoming aware of the actual value of these things
I think I've gotten a bit jaded this past gen. That's one change I'm very cognizant of. I'm harder to impress or surprise these days, and have a bit more cynicism. I guess that's natural when you're over thirty
What hasn't changed all that much throughout the entirety of my life is the type of games I like though. It's still mostly jrpgs, platform games, and beat 'em ups. I've always had an infinity for quirky games too. I always favor Japanese games it seems, which has left me feeling a bit disconnected from the industry these past couple years as Japanese gaming has fallen by the wayside.
One thing I hate is that it seems like it's harder these days for me to find time for games, and adding to the frustration is the ever increasing industry obsession with making games as big and time consuming as possible. When you have less time for games, you appreciate the smaller, less time consuming ones. That's why I've been developing a lot of love for digital games like Mark of the Ninja, Journey, etc.

This gen has burned me out and left me looking for something good to play, IE RETRO. I loved Fallout 3 and first ME and others from this gen, but they are few and far between. I do play modern racing games but even GT5 is less fun to me than GT3. The games I like this gen arent going to stick with me I dont think. Bioshock might but games like that are rare today.
I think there is some level of x factor in gaming that cant be explained and that the industry is for pure profit now and doesn't care that the games are crap cause most people eat them up. But once the people find a new fad I think they will have alienated their core and I think and we may see another crash.
MGS started my collecting bug and I have been going crazy ever since. I dont know there is just something simple and pure about old games. They were meant to be fun. Not make political statements or change your thinking. THEY WERE FUN.
I put in anything post Xbox PS2 GC and if I have already played it I just leave it there to collect dust. BLEH
I find that this is why I got into the run for the new release cycle. NEW GAME TRADE IN OLD GAME DISAPPOINTMENT. Found myself just trying to find something new and fresh and spent 3 years just frustrated with gaming. I thought maybe I had grew out of it etc.
So one day I went back and played some older titles for my PS2 and had a blast again and was hooked. I wear out my SNES and Gens while my 360 and PS3 just sit and rot. I have a PS4 preordered for launch but I doubt I will keep it.

Re: Has this gen changed your gaming habits and views?
My habits have certainly changed since the start of this gen. At the start, I was mainly a console gamer due to the fact that I couldn't afford to be a PC gamer. Retro gaming was far less mainstream, so I spent as much time on older consoles as I did on my 360. Even then I didn't usually play a game until it was at least a year old. I spent nearly all of my free time gaming, sometimes for as long as six hours in one go. Now I have much more money, so I play mainly on PC. Retro games cost a lot more, and new games go on sale a lot faster than they used to, so my gaming is more focused on recent releases than it used to be. And sadly, I have a lot less time for gaming now. I don't play much except on the weekends.

I don't know about my habits, but my preferences have, surely. I think really, I just avoid games renown for solely the story (ie. Uncharted, while the story is interesting I just can't get past the tedious gameplay) and go for ones that offer some form of pure gameplay and challenge, now. And while I own both a 360 and a PS3, the 360 is a just a Trials HD/Evo box, and the PS3 just streams netflix. The vast majority of my gaming is done on PC, and has been for over a decade now.
If anything, I've grown cynical of any big budget release. I've been burned too many times to allow myself to get my hopes up. Whenever I play a new fps online I end up thinking how much more I enjoy Quake Live or Enemy Territory. I loathe the 'realism' and non-exploitable movement physics of new games.
However, I absolutely love indie games. I've sunk almost 200 hours into Binding of Isaac. I've already dumped 15 hours into Rogue Legacy. There is just an abundance of cheap, fun and often unique games on offer in this realm.
So, while I have a strong distaste for the new blockbuster titles and could lament the state of DLC and DRM. I find it hard to be upset. I still play games, old and new, I just don't venture often to the AAA side these days. Which is fine, because my backlog will take me the next decade to finish.

I remember so much hype and excitement when Sonic 3 was about to come out. I remember the day I got it. It wasn't even my birthday or anything. We stopped at Target and my mom went in and got it. It was like it was accepted that my life could not continue until I owned it.
I don't know what that has to do with anything.
