RPG > Everything else imaginable. Which is ironic really since my favourite game series isn't an RPG whatsoever. :|

I'm fine with first or third person shooters but usually get bored with them pretty quick. I've enjoyed most of the stealth games I've played but haven't actually played enough of them to make a judgment on the genre as a whole. I liked almost all the point-and-click adventure games I've ever played so I consider myself a fan of that genre. Also I've played a small amount of survival horror games and real-time strategy games that I liked.
Those are the most stand-out ones off the top of my head.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

Found this thread and it got me thinking of all the different genres. But how do we separate some from the others? When does a platformer become a hack-n-slash for instance?

-Action/Adventure
-Hack-n-Slash
-Platformer
-Survival Horror
-Sandbox
-FPS
-RPG/JRPG
-Fighting/Beat 'em Up
-Shmups
-Sports
-RTS
-Racing
-Puzzle

In order of how often I play them.........

Turn-based JRPGs
Action RPGs
WRPGs
Strategy RPGs
Roguelikes and dungeon crawlers
Action/adventure
Platformers (mostly 2D) / run & gun
Shmups
Classic sports games
Classic FPS
PC-style point-and-click adventure
Racing/driving
Puzzle
Strategy
Simulation
Beat 'em up
Fighters
Survival horror

I've also discovered lately that I like music and rhythm games quite a bit, though I only own two.

I also play tons of old Atari, Intellivision, Odyssey 2, and Tandy games. No idea what genre that kind of stuff fits into now. I just call them "the classics."

Hey Bone, what do you consider the cut off for "classic FPS" to be?

I'm mostly into the classics like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Hexen, Quake, etc... Pre-6th generation.

That isn't to say I hate modern FPS titles - I really dig the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. Some Halo stuff is okay too.

Much like sports games though, I'd rather explore the old classics I missed out on the first time than look for new stuff.
