That's pretty much the only effective way I could think of to be motivated to beat my games. I have a bad habit of playing half a game, putting it down, and playing a different game.
I've already failed at this one. Oops. I think I can recover though. I've been making progress in a few titles.
- Try to get into the Shin Megami Tensei series... I'll probably start on the PS2 titles; not sure which one though. Knowing me, I'll probably start off with the least expensive games.![]()
Not attempted yet.
I may give Persona 3 a second chance as well. I didn't really like the PSP version... Maybe the PS2 version would grab my attention a little more?
I actually did this. The game is still very flawed and I don't think I'll ever try to play it again.
- Get a copy of Mushihimesama for PS2.

Aspirational Gaming Goals for 2013

My progress:

alienjesus wrote:Don't you love it when I remind everyone that a quarter of the year has gone by? Anyone fancy updating their progress?Blu wrote:Gaming Goals:
1. All the games I haven't beaten from this generation, finish 'em.
Um, I beat Binary Domain, Metal Gear HD Collection, and a few others. I think I'm still fairly unaccomplished on this goal.
2. Go through the Yakuza Series, starting from the beginning.
Yakuza and Yakuza 2 done. Need to beat Yakuza 3 and Yakuza 4, and dare I say Dead Souls?
3. Beat some shmups and beat-em ups.
Raiden at Racketboy Meet Up, Panzer Dragoon & Orta, Yakuza, some shmups on Capcom Collection. Still work to do, but feeling good about this one.
Collection Goals:
1. Limit the new games I pick up to a few select titles in the year.
I think I might've lost on this one. Acquired some SMS games, Dreamcast Games, and a few Wii games. The rule I made for myself is anything I flip on ebay is the amount of money I can spend on games to add to the collection. So far, I haven't gone out of pocket.
2. Slim down some of my older titles and stuff I don't play. Trade 'em, sell 'em, to pick up childhood greats.
So far so good.
3. Get some of the cooler, unique titles for the Wii. Let's tap was a hit with the girlfriend, so other titles like that might be worthwhile.
Dokapon Kingdom, Fortune Street, Metroid Prime Trilogy, LA Machine Guns
4. Replace my 72 pin or do other things to fix my NES and carts.
Nope.

Re: Aspirational Gaming Goals for 2013
Oh dear, we're half a year down already. Any progress?
Gaming
- Try to get 3 or less unfinished games per system on my backloggery by my birthday (December 24th).
Not going well at all. Have to beat 3 PS1 games, 1 each for Saturn, SNES, Game Gear, PS2 and Neo Geo Pocket, plus 6 for Wii.
- Beat at least 2 Final Fantasy games in my collection.
Nope. FFVII is on my summer list though
- Beat 50% or more Together Retro games out of the months I participate in.
Joined in on Bubble Bobble, which I beat later as part of my summer list, and Fantastic Dizzy, which I beat during the month we played it. I still plan to join in on Zork, Parappa, Lemmings and Zombies.
- Beat a game on every console I own.
So far: 3DS, DS, GBC, GB, Wii U, Wii, N64, PSP, Master System. Still to go: GBA, Pokemon Mini, Virtual Boy, Gamecube, SNES, NES, Dreamcast, Saturn, Mega Drive, Game Gear, PS2, PS1, NGPC, TG16, XBox, 3DO, PC. 9 down, 17 to go. Oh dear.
- Beat at least half of the games left on my Games Not Beaten 2012 list at the end of December 2012.
Beaten:FF Tactics: War of the Lions, Paper Mario 3DS, Mario Tennis Open, NSMB2, Loco Roco. Not Beaten: Catrap, Pokemon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire, Metroid Prime 3. Sold: Scribblenauts. That's that done then! At least it's not all a failure.
Collecting
- Limit myself to 3 new games per month maximum - with exceptions: If I buy a new system that comes bundled with games, they don't count to that months total, and games bought for Together Retro don't count either. The idea here is to make myself buy the games I really want that may cost a little more, by buying less random crap!
Nope, this has gone to pot. I'm generally buying 3 or less physical games a month, but cheap digital downloads are keeping by new game acquisition rate much higher.
- Buy at least 1 game for each system I didn't buy a game for this year (Gamecube, Saturn, 3DO, NGPC, Turbografx, Pokémon Mini, Virtual Boy)
Progress: STILL absolutely zero games bought for any of these consoles. I still haven't really had a lot of spare cash floating around though..
- Focus more on handheld games over console purchases (50% or more handheld for new purchases in 2013)
Kinda? It's more that I'm buying more digital games this year than anything.
- Buy a Wii U
Another successful mission at least![]()
Re: Aspirational Gaming Goals for 2013
COLLECTING
-Reach 225 games for my SNES collection. Done
PLAYING
-Reach 300 completed games in my collection. Done
My two goals are complete, though I've since acquired a new goal: work my way onto the Top 10 Games Complete list for the SNES on Backloggery.com.
Unfortunately this is a difficult goal to reach since it's a moving target. When I first started considering it, the #10 slot was at 107 games completed. It's now at 128. I was sitting at around 86 completed SNES games when I started but now am at 111, so with perseverence I will get there. But I'm only including games I currently own, and I'm going up against a crowd of people tracking the games they have owned, borrowed, or emulated.
Re: Aspirational Gaming Goals for 2013
Oh cool I can do that too
I've been getting back into my music stuff lately and been trying to build up my vinyl collection and whatnot now that I have a turntable, so my game buying has slowed down a bit. The rising costs of the hobby don't help things any there.
Still, just give me a few months and I'll probably go on another game buying binge.
AppleQueso wrote:most of my goals here are kinda rambling, probably won't hit all of these but I'm definitely gonna try:
Libraries:
-build up the collections of my most currently neglected systems. I have only a handful of games for Game Boy (currently only 5 GB, 2 GBC, and 4 GBA), Turbo Grafx (6), and Sega Master System (7) right now and want to build those up.
NOPE, nothin happened here
-To a lesser extent, I'd like to build up my Atari 2600 (13), Saturn (11) and Dreamcast (10) collections as well.
I have increased my Saturn and Dreamcast collections by exactly 1 each. Haha.
-Most of the popular Wii titles should start really dropping in price soon, so I'd like to jump on that and built up a better Wii library while the prices are good.
N-to-the-OPE
Hardware
-Get a new Sega CD and built a modest library for that. I briefly had one, but got rid of it for some reason.
Oh definitely yes. Even got a budding library that I'm pretty happy with.
-Hori Gamecube GBPlayer controller.
Nope.
-Get a pong console. Maybe a Telstar or something.
Whaddya know the pong console I grabbed just happened to be a Telstar. Ha.
-Get more second generation consoles and built up some modest libraries for them. Colecovision, Intelllivision, Odyssey2, Vectrex, whatever.
Nada
-Virtual Boy, perhaps?
Zip
-Master System Light Phaser. How else am I going to play Safari Hunt and Rescue Mission?
Zilch
-More N64 controllers. I only have one!
NEP
Misc
-Continue doing what I've been doing with building up the Nintendo side of my library.
uh..... not really
-Finish getting the first two or three years or so of Nintendo Power.
nope
-Try and finish re-building my childhood Game Boy, N64, SNES, and NES libraries. I'm pretty close to this one.
still missing quite a few
-Work more on my NES game. See if I can get the engine solidly built and maybe some test levels and a solid design document put together.
hahahahaha, I almost had horizontal scrolling and background collisions working properly
-See more games that I start through to the end. I'm not concerned too much about backlogs, but I'd like to actually regularly finish the games I start.
Uh... perhaps. I haven't started anything since playing Valkyria Chronicles, and I plan to finish that before moving onto something else. Been kinda slow about it lately

The PSP version is the superior version, as the gameplay has been improved by changes made to the series in P4. And the game, to my knowledge atleast, is considerably shorter thanks to the visual novel style it uses (which is also more visually appealing). Oh and there's a new character (a female protagonist). I don't see any reason why playing the inferior version of a game would make it more enjoyable.

Haven't done any of it yet.

I hope to:
Learn to stop impulse buying PC games when they go on sale.
Buy a Wii and PS Vita.
Expand all my current collections.
Cut down a bit of my huge backlog of games (Currently 205).
