Two years of game design (Maya 8.0 at the time and we crashed Macs pretty easily, so I never believe that myth!) with a hilariously cool teacher that supposedly worked for Epic at some point, yeah.AppleQueso wrote:What the fuck you had a GAMING class in high school!?Xeogred wrote: Won a little Street Fighter II tournament my gaming class had in high school, got a Best Buy gift card.
I went to a brand new school my first year of high school and was the first full graduating class through the whole thing. So that was neat. As you could guess though, the principal and school in general treated us like shit though. Aerospace Engineering, Audio Visual Production, and the other big programs got all the attention. We were just "playing games" or some crap.
One time we were having a game day (pretty rare, I swear) and the principal walked in... our teacher played it so cool it was legendary. He just set her straight letting her know we were studying technical aspects about the game, which was half true. But I think we were just having a game day doing nothing productive.
I learned a lot about games and love the knowledge I have, had a blast. To top it off the class was already 2 hours long and my senior year, it was one of my homerun/study hours too... so I was there for 3 hours a day.
My school's senior skip day was Halo 2's release if that sums up how geeky it was at the time. A tiny bit before everyone and their dog started playing games.
It's just depressing I either never got the DVD of my work from the teacher or lost it over the years. Level design was my favorite... we made levels we were supposed to import into Unreal. We took photos of ourselves in poses for texturing ourselves for a huge project (I sucked at texturing), and boning was hard as hell (pun?). We made goofy guns and items, some racing F-Zero like track idea thing, a castle exterior/interior. Animated some stuff. Crazy good times, but it made me realize I didn't want my hobby to become a chore, so I never went to Phoenix to drown myself in 40,000 dollars worth of loans and stuff... like some of my other friends. I don't think any of them made it through, one of my best friends is just stuck in Arizona now working at Quiznos or something.
Anyways yeah, the two years we were in the program we had game parties at the end of the year. We just took over the gym and everyone brought TV's/consoles and had a blast.
This is ALL a "had to be there" experience haha but yeah, still a lot of stuff I joke about with some of my friends I keep up with to this day, like how hilarious our teacher was. But he was still legit and we did have some special guests one time who did some speeches and showcased schools and such, can't remember who they were though...
Oh, but I DID get an endorsement too... man I should put that up on my wall. Only worthwhile school accomplishment I've got under my belt. With that came us having to do a speech in front of like hundreds of people. It was literally like straight out of a movie kind of deal. Somehow I winged it though, even though I hate attention like that... I guess I'm worse at classroom speeches with ~20 people or something, haha. So yeah there's that... I put it on my resume, lol.
It looks like the program/courses are way more in depth than compared to when I was going:

... I'm bragging a little, sorry for going off there haha.
I can safely say it hasn't ruined how I view games at all either or anything. I know how a lot of it works and how it's a ton of smoke and mirrors, but yeah. Kind of knew I wouldn't want it to be a job.

I started playing Hotline Miami on the Vita and finished a level with A+ rank! I never pulled that off when I played through the game on PC. I feel like a badass
