Best Tom & Jerry thing after the original shorts?

Post by BitFaced »

Tom & Jerry was a product of its time, and not only can the animation of the golden age be hard to recreate because of its high quality standard, but like it says in this article:

http://www.cartoonbrew.com/ideas-commen ... 52178.html

You can't really recreate something like Tom & Jerry as, again, it was a product of its time, place and people, as well as how you'd need high quality talent, which isn't a good sign as The Karate Guard had Joe Barbera on board. Similar to how every time the Looney Tunes tried to follow up on the original shorts they failed (or at least the creators thought that) and admitted they went a whole new direction with The Looney Tunes Show to avert that. Though Disney might somehow be able to subvert this with their cartoons.

Having said that though, what was/is the best Tom & Jerry-related TV show, movie, or short that came after that tried to follow the original shorts? I have heard mixed things about Tom & Jerry Tales, some calling it the return of Tom & Jerry, others calling it absolutely terrible.

Some of the films are better than others, but on the whole, I would say that the DTV films by WB Animation are the best modern use of the characters by far. A Nutcracker Tale is my favorite among them, followed by The Magic Ring and Tom And Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes.

Nothing comes close.

Didja' know someone (at Cartoon Network I believe) altered a few of the original shorts to make them seem less racist? They changed the voice of the maid, and also lightened her skin tone.

Of course nothing can come close but I ask what is the best or at least awful production after the original shorts.
Also I think the racism cuts go back to TV edits decades before CN, as Chuck Jone's team were the ones to actually redraw parts of one of the shorts to show a white girl instead of Mammy Two-Shoes.

I suppose the Chuck Jones Tom and Jerries are the least awful production after the original shorts, but it's nowhere as good as the originals by such a wide margin I wouldn't really bother.

Ever notice the cat's huge eyebrows? One of my shipmates in the Navy had huge eyebrows so we all nicknamed him Tom. :D

"Least awful". That sums it up. They're all awful after the original shorts.

There are a few 'eras' in the T&J show that were apparent because of the art style. I think my least favorite are the ones that look/sound more like Loony Tunes cartoons. I love Loony Tunes, but I much prefer Tom and Jerry in the "ccccc-ccccrambole!" era, with the maid, etc. Somehow they're funnier than the ones made in the 60s-ish era.

At least that's me.

I always thought the cartoon was awful to begin with, but that's because I never cared for Jerry.

Also, Jerry is my grandfather's name, and Tom is one of my uncles.
