Man of Steel
As a Superman purist I had trouble wrapping my head around the new take on Krypton. It's not much different from what has been published before, but the kick butt Jor-El was. I also miss the idea that he embodies "truth, justice and the American way".
The ending with Zod was awesome. At first I was shocked/surprised with how the altercation ended; yet I think to finalize the growth of the character it was necessary for him to one day become the Big Blue Boyscout.
Speaking of the Big Blue Boyscout, many people don't like that idea of good/wholesomeness of the character, but this movie did a good job showing he has emotion and has to hold it in to do the right thing (ie. the logging truck and bully scene) so him being wholesome and idealistic seems more realistic.

In the end, I feel that it was setup for a Superman/Batman or Justice League movie. I can not see Earth embracing someone that shares the powers that destroyed Metropolis on a level worse that 9/11, and this fear is the theme of the current Justice League stories.

World War z
Like I said in the post about the movie: I liked was entertained by this remake, not sure if I liked it better than the original - "I Am Legend"

So does The Caves Of Steel, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Actually, I'm kind of hoping it doesn't 'cause I'd love to do the job myself if I ever got the chance.

I'll put that on my library list as I haven't read it yet.

For those not in the know GOOD KINGS BAD KINGS is a work of fiction describing the lives of four teenagers living in a juvie center for kids with disabilities. It's one of those alternating narratives not unlike Dracula where you read each character's "diary" and you know sooner or later each story will merge.

Very QT type stuff.

So I rewatched The Raid: Redemption. While the fighting didn't shock me as much this time, I still find it an excellent film.

And then I followed it with Howard the Duck.

It's almost the perfect bad movie: the script is atrocious (particularly the dialogue), the cast includes famous actors in horrible roles (Tim Robbins in particular made me cringe), the Howard puppet looks pretty awful (though better than low-budget CG), the music is dated and represents the worst of 1980s glam rock, and the best performance came out of hilarious-but-still-a-creepy-pedophile Jeffrey Jones. Also, if I have my way, I will never again have to see Midwesterners wearing Karate Kid headbands. Oh, and duck people nudity. Why did I have to see duck people nudity?

On my scale of awesomely bad movies, I would rate Howard just below Battleship and just above Street Fighter. Seriously, you guys need to see Battleship. It's so bad, it's hysterical.

I've been avoiding it, but I think my girlfriend recorded it to her TVR when she had a free weekend of HBO...

I just finished watching the original The Mummy (1932) with Boris Karloff. It sucked.

I was fine with the slower pace, lack of SFX (obviously), and a more theatrical style of acting. In fact, that's what I wanted to see. However, the ridiculously stupid main characters and lack of real emotions was not expected. When your main character is chatting excitedly about a girl he's fallen in love with, while standing in the exact spot where his father was murdered a few hours ago, then you've seriously failed as a writer. Being a "classic" does not give you a free pass.

I plan to check out a few other Universal Horror films and see how it compares. Dracula will probably be next.

Dracula is just as slow as The Mummy.

I thought Frankenstein was the best of the originals, with The Wolf Man right behind it.

Saw White House Down today. It's a fun action movie, and James Woods does a great performance.
