Is the PS1 DualShock the same as the PS2 DualShock 2?

I mean I'm assuming that you can use a PS1 DualShock on PS2 and it should play just like a DS2. No?

Yeah, they work. You can even use non-dual shock PS1 controllers on a PS2. For PS1 games, naturally, but also for PS2 games that don't require the sticks.

Yeah I knew that the digital pads worked for games that don't require analog, but just wanted to make sure that the analog portion of the PS1 Dualshock works just fine on PS2.

I believe there are a handful of PS2 games that do not work with the PS1 Dualshock. Specifically if they use the pressure sensitive buttons. But why not just upgrade to PS2 controllers? They are fairly inexpensive.

I have several PS2 controllers. I don't need to upgrade. I was just curious if I found a PS1 dualshock in the wild, is it worth picking up as a spare PS2 controller?

Ah, I forgot about that!

Well you can still use them, you just wont be able to use any pressure sensitive functions. For example, IIRC, the gas in GTA3 is pressure sensitive. It would be full on or nothing with no in between.

I agree.

Short story: I was in Wal Mart the other day and noticed an end cap in the video game section that had PS2 controller / memory card bundles. It was a box that contained a PS2 controller and two colored memory cards. I was thinking, "Cool! New old stock! I'll grab one!" But then I found out they were $50 :(

Fair enough. I was just curious. I actually need one more PS2 controller to have the four my Super Joybox 5 supports. The cool part about PS1 controllers is that they are easy to hack for arcade stick use. Super easy to solder to.

No no no. PS dualshock doesn't even feel the same as dualshock 2. The latter feel MUCH more refined in just about every respect. Even PSone dualshock feels much more improved to me over the standard dualshock. I think with Dualshock 1 you have manually select analog control for PS2 games where as with Dualshock 2, its preset. I may be wrong here though.

Some games won't even let you start without a DualShock 2, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XII are two that come to mind, (at least the PAL release) will give the old 'Insert a DualShock 2 Controller into Port 1' style screen if you try to play with a regular DualShock.
