Axelay is a fine game. Once you sit down and spend time with it, it's one of the better shmups on the SNES. As other pointed out, try these too:

Space Megaforce
UN Squadron
Gradius III
Firepower 2000
Super Nova
Darius Twin
Blazeon
Super E.D.F.
Thunder Spirits

What other consoles do you have? Or better yet, would you be comfortable using Mame?
Yes I did check out Space Megaforce, but it was just a bit out of what I was willing to pay (and I'm not against the idea of paying $50+ for a good game but for a genre I'm not entirely sure I'll like I'm hesitant).

For consoles, at the moment I just have SNES and PS3. I plan on getting a Retron 5 when it comes out sometime this summer so I'll be able to play NES, SNES, Genesis, SFC, Gameboy carts. And, not to sound ignorant, but what's a Mame? Ok that sounded ignorant.

Darius Twin and Phalanx seem to be pretty cheap. I might go ahead and get those too.

Thanks for the suggestions/information everyone. I do appreciate it.

MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. It allows you to emulate many different arcade boards. A lot of people are against emulation of any form, but if you are okay with it, it is a great way to check out some of those arcade games that never were ported to a system. Otherwise, you'd have to pay a few hundred dollars (or in some cases, even more) for each game.

And don't worry about sounding ignorant, I know I learn new things here everyday.

Oh, and as for what shmup I am playing?

Likewise!

I'm clinging on to a Top 10 spot at the minute, which I'm fairly happy with. I'm travelling back from Japan to Europe this weekend, though, so I probably won't be able to squeeze too many more credits in...

You're score is pretty dang nice man. I actually ended up going back to defaults and just playing Original Mode. I knew I my score wouldn't get much higher within the week, but playing with those special rules got me curious about the game. I'll definitely be playing it more often now.

Another ExedExes Shmup Weekend(TM), all finished.

Started out with Gun-Nac (NES). For not playing it in a few years, got to the end.

Got a new score on Chaos Field (posted in that score thread), then got out Namco Museum 50 (Gamecube) for new scores -

Bosconian (a kinda-sorta shmup really)

Dragon Spirit (new score!)

Xevious (don't hate)

and Galaga '88

Damn, it goes for that much in the US? I picked up the PAL version of Super Aleste for £5 about 2 months back. And £3 of that was the postage

I got the 1cc in M.U.S.H.A. recently. Good game, though it's a bit easy up until the last couple of stages.

Also got the 1cc in Gradius for the first time. It was the PSP Collection version on default settings, so possibly a bit easier than the arcade version (smaller hit-box for one thing). Died a few times along the way, and managed to recover each time, so the checkpoints aren't too harsh in the original game compared to some of the sequels...
