Thanks, and I actually found Ibara pretty forgiving, took me about 2 weeks. Did a no medal clear first, and then a medal clear with no silly tricks. I think a lot of people get caught up with boss milking and whatnot and forget about more straightforward strategy and execution.

Garegga on the other hand I've been at for YEARS and still no 1CC. I used to get to BHmk2 with some consistency, but now I'm having to relearn a lot.

I was able to hit stage 5 on Cyvern after a couple weeks - never did make it past stage 4 on Air Garrett. She blew my you know what off.

All those clears - Very impressive indeed.

Yeah, I know I definitely get caught up trying to do all the little tricks in Yagawa games, which makes them all feel very hard. I really enjoy them though, so I should take the time to learn one without worrying about boss milking and crazy tricks, at least at first.

So, I've been playing more Futari, like always. I took a break from God mode and decided to try and break my BL Orig high score of 364m. The first run ended on Stage 5 with about 415m, and the 2nd run was an ALL (no-miss up to Larsa!) with a score of 564m. This score bumped me up from #7 to #3 over on shmups forum! :)

Holy ****! That's an insane MFBL-O score!

I personally am not too crazy about the original modes, but power to you man, you must feel great. :D

Ha ha, thanks man. Yeah, I was quite excited!

1.5 Orig I'm not too crazy about, but I do enjoy it in BL, just because its fun to try to leech large gems once the game goes into overdrive. I really want to work on God mode though. So far I can only make it to Stage 4.

I am going to break my shmup cherry. I just ordered my first shmup....Axelay for SNES. I'll start it once I finish Super Metroid.

I'm excited. There is just something attractive about shmups...

Ugh. Axelay, IMO, is a horrible intro to the genre because of its unorthodox (and, I think, unfun) movement mechanic. If you like it, great! If not, don't be put off to the genre!

Hmm ok. Any other recommendations? I've read that the SNES is weak on shmups, but at the moment that is the only console I've got.

I was looking at Super Aleste, but I'd have to pay a bit for that (my Retroboy plays SFC games). Super R-Type seems to have slow down issues, and R-Type 3 was out of my price range as well.

Gradius 3 maybe? That seems to be reasonably priced.

For Super Aleste, that one did come out here as Space Megaforce. Its one of the better SNES shooters.

Gradius III is a nice game. Much easier than the arcade version, but thats not really a bad thing. If slowdown bothers you though, this game is pretty heavily plagued by it, especially at full power.

You are right though, the SNES is pretty weak for shmups. There are still some enjoyable titles, but most other systems have a better offering.

What other consoles do you have? Or better yet, would you be comfortable using Mame?

Gradius 3 is also really goddamn hard.

Compared to the other 16-bit consoles and to the NES, the SNES is weak on shmups, yes. I like Space Megaforce, Phalanx, and Darius Twin off the bat. Raiden Trad might be a good intro shmup that isn't too horribly priced (even if it is a so-so port of the game). Some folks like U.N Squadron and S.T.G.. I don't care for the former and haven't tried the latter yet (though I hear it is easy).
