Okay, Sarah is level 20 but I'm not close to a town. Promote her as soon as I can, or is there any advantage in waiting?

There are hidden items that allow you to promote a priest, knight, warrior, or mage into a different class. There are two of the priest items (the second is very late game) and one of the other three. The priest item is definitely a "this is better than Vicar in every single way", so I'd wait to promote Sarah until you get it. If you are diligent in your checking towns for items you should get it no problem.

Plus, she can level up to 40 in her base class, so that's extra stats.

Ah, so if I promote her to vicar she can't be promoted again?

Correct. Everyone can only be promoted once. And the promotion items I mentioned are consumed on use; you make sure the character is holding the promotion item and the priest will say something like "oooh, that's a cool item you have, I can make your character this other class instead".

Bird guy officially joined my party. Then some bearded guy did. Fighting some wizards and zombies and damn this battle is much harder than the previous ones. Damn stairs.

Soooooooo I guess killing one specific enemy will end some battles, huh? Didn't know that - I ended up losing a bunch of potential experience points as I killed the "boss" dude while about half of the enemies on the field remained. Ah well.

Yeah a boss character who isn't a super boss. Usually the lone new enemy in the back accompanied with a healer.

Don't worry, just egress next battle if need be. This run through I actually didn't egress until a little past where you are.

Gosh that King had quite the army. The real issue is that they are all together and get involved when you try to snipe one at a time. But they also seemed to be quite high level compared to my (all unpromoted) units that are in the very low 20s.

I managed without losing anyone, but I didn't clear the board. I think I got more than half of them though!

I got the 2 healers fairly early which really helped. Their Heal 3 can recover 30 HP :/ I only have one healer! They got together such that I could get them (and 2 other enemy units as well) in target for a Blaze 3 and then a Bolt, then mopped the healers up (and the other 2 followed shortly). But the enemy King started attacking and I had to mob him otherwise I would start losing units. I barely made it.

Well it took nearly most of the game, but I finally got Sarah promoted to Vicar. And I also beat Cameela as well.

Holy crap! At the Kraken? How much did you grind?
