No, that's not what I'm saying. Rowling isn't exactly a great writer herself. And as I said before in the Movies thread, the discussion wasn't which was a better story, or whatever (though that one was about HP and GoT), but rather on the (absent) merits of DSH's reasoning for not liking Potter.

I think part of what you don't like about the way Tolkien writes is due to the era he was from. The writing styles were different.

No I actually like Shakespeare. The problem with DSH is that he equates me saying someone is a terrible writer with "OH MAN LOTR SUXOR'D BECAUSE IT DIDNT TALK ABOUT LAZERS AND SHIT."

When in reality I said "he created a great universe that influenced fantasy books." He just didn't write it down very well. Just like Asimov was actually quite a boring writer. Again, Seldon's universe was grand, detailed and what not, but it was sort of flat because it was so slow paced. Just boring.

To me its like a Batman fanatic that can't believe you don't think Batman is the greatest superhero on the planet.

I think the issue is that you are dismissing a universally acclaimed great writer as being bad when you most likely should be saying you didnt care for his writing or style.

I think Tolkien is a great writer beyond just building his world.

I don't see why I "should" provide anything, but sure.

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is a great series, but it got too long so I had to just put them down.
I like the Mars series by Robinson
the Carter books by Burroughs
Just about anything by Clarke (Childhoods End is probably my favorite, maybe the Rama books too)
Peirs Anthony's Xanth series is pretty well done.
Martin's Game of Thrones
Even though he's a gaybashing jerk, Orson Scott Card's works are pretty great. His retelling of the Mormon belief in the Homecoming Saga was pretty cool. Actually made me get angry when reading about certain characters. And of course you have the Ender/Shadow series.
