WTF with this bullshit again? You mentioned this yesterday and it was a tangent so I let it go, but this is the third time in recent memory where you've spewed this nonsense about Tolkien being a poor writer.

Here was the other time: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 47#p752147

Above that post you gave your "rationale" in which you also claim Asimov is a bad writer. This argument is insanely hollow, and mountains of accolades from both literary scholars and popular audiences contradict your inane claims. I know that Tolkien bashing is awesome troll bait for a forum like this, and I know I'm biting in, but seriously you need to quit with the bullshit.

So should I just claim Lord of the Rings was too complex for my feeble brain and that I walked out in the last 30 minutes of the film version? That makes it ok, then right?

Tolkien, and Asimov were creative. They just put things to words in a poor manner. Accept it.

(edit: OH SHIT I just realized this is the 4th time I said Asimov/Tolkien sucked at writing! DAMMIT A FIFTH!!!)

For the record, Heinlein wrote Starship Troopers. You can add him to the list.

Well, I didn't want to make DSH's brain explode again. He might come in here and say that my posts were too contrived/convoluted for him to understand, and then walk out 4/5's of the way through our conversation.

For FUCK'S SAKE you are acting like a complete DICK WAD. Stop being such a giant gaping asshole.

A) I never said I couldn't understand Harry Potter or that it was challenging. I said the films presented a contrived/convoluted plot that seemed long for the sake of being long. I said that was likely the fault of the medium (film), not that of the author of the books.

B) There's not a kernel of truth to the claim that Tolkien or Asimov "put things to words in a poor manner". That's just fucking dumb. They are and were heralded as great writers, great thinkers, great storytellers, etc. There are scores of scholarly books and hundreds of academic journal articles about each writer, the vast majority of them praising and studying aspects of their writing (not just their world-creating) to understand their talent and appeal. They are near universally loved by audiences that encounter their work.

I should have learned my lesson to stop engaging with you, but you are managing to push my buttons pretty well. You are entitled to not care for these authors - hell, there are plenty of great writers whose work I don't care for (e.g. Paluahimiuk) - but have the decency to recognize that they are deserving of respect as great writers, and don't try to slag on them because you found their writing to be boring or slow.

tl:dr

Sorry you had to resort to 3rd grade name calling. Maybe when you grow up and can understand that people don't like the same things you do we can talk again.

So you think Harry Potter is better written than LotR?

No, that's not what I'm saying. Rowling isn't exactly a great writer herself. And as I said before in the Movies thread, the discussion wasn't which was a better story, or whatever (though that one was about HP and GoT), but rather on the (absent) merits of DSH's reasoning for not liking Potter.

you were the one inferring I was stupid and couldn't understand children's stories, so wipe the smug off your fucking face.

I don't care that you like different things than me, I do care that you just write it off as "terrible writing" instead of just admitting that maybe it wasn't for you. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it is terrible, especially when there's volumes of evidence to the contrary by people who have expertise in evaluating literature.
