I was ranking how much I like the games, not characters. That was a ranking of how much fun I have with each series.

As far as games go, Mario wins for me. Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World are quite possibly the two best platformers of all time.
YOSHI'S ISLAND
Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 also deserve a mention for being one of the few 3D platformers that are actually good platformers and for having such great and imaginative level design.
BoneSnapDeez wrote: Mega Man 2 is a great game, never really got into the series beyond that. The other NES games pale in comparison and I never gave the SNES titles a shot.
You need, no you must, play Mega Man 9 and X. Don't worry about any other titles beyond that, but Mega Man X and 9 are amazing examples of 8-bit->16-bit and how to do a retro "8-bit" platformer.

Mega Man games whip Mario and Sonic games into submission with a studded belt even on bad nights that didn't end well with the Mrs and ended in heavy solitary drinking and deep life contemplation. There's no comparison. MM 2 and 3 are the pinnacle of 8 bit platforming and X 1-3 are the same for 16 bit.

That's just my opinion etc. The challenge plays a huge role in my opinion here, as well as a love for the music and just the overall aesthetics. The games are infinitely replayable and rewarding to me. I do like Sonic and Mario to an extent though. They just feel very rudimentary compared to MM games and don't engage me nearly as much.

I dont understand the challenge argument in regards to Megaman X. Megaman X games are not hard at all. Way harder to beat SMB 3 with out using whistles or saves than any of the SNES Megaman X games.

tbh, I can't play Megaman 2 anymore. It seems so poorly designed after playing Megaman 9 for so long.

I have X3 on the Saturn and it's sort of disappointing in my opinion. First X is the embodiment of a great sequel and what to do with a series with new, more powerful hardware (too bad 32/64 bit and 3D Mega Man never worked out  ), but already in X3 I felt that they went way overboard with all the upgrades and revisting levels to find stuff etc. But tbh, even later Mega Man games on the NES did that so it's not something unique to the X-series.

If you can stomach Egoraptor's style, I recommend checking out his video on Mega Man vs Mega Man X. Such a brilliant analysis of Mega Man X, and what good game design in general is. Also his sequelitis video on Castlevania 4 is spot on.

Speaking of Mega Man 2. I just read an article on nintendolife talking about why Mega Man is using a pistol instead of the Mega Buster on the US versions NES box art.

"Marc Ericksen was the illustrator that produced the box art, and rockman-corner.com has stumbled upon an interview that he gave to Nintendo Age last year in which he explains how he was shown a beta of the game and wondered what the character (Mega Man) was firing; Capcom's Art Director in the US was on hand to say that it must be a pistol, as he couldn't see a rifle.
With a short deadline making life harder the pistol was included, and remains an oddity to this day."

X2 is pretty frustrating at times in that case, I've gotten to the point where I can breeze through the first game and X3, but X2 still gives me some grief at times.

Man, anyone that says Mega Man games aren't hard is trying too hard to look like he's a pro-gamer.
