JayJaySut wrote:Sonic the hedgehog has never really been any competition for Mario. The genesis games are pretty fun but they aren't great. The whole Sonic adventure series is really overrated. People like to think that he'll be getting back on track sometime but he never really was on track. He had some fun games but he was never the great character people like to make him out to be (except for blast processing that changed EVERYTHING!).
I really enjoyed Sonic growing up over Mario which I believe has more to do with "blast processing" than anything. The speed and boss fights is really the only plus I can think of now that old skool Sonic had over Mario. Sonic 1-3 +Knuckles are and will always be classic games that everyone should play at least once. To me in my adult life tho, Mario is more fun because there is more re-play value there than just running/jumping to the right.

I believe there is significant merit in your post, good sir, and would like to endorse it wholeheartedly.brunoafh wrote:Mega Man > Sonic and Mario

Ah. See, I rank Mega Man ahead of the other two due to how useful I consider him. By gaining his enemies powers, along with help from other capable robots, and gaining the ability to slide or power his Mega Buster, he seems the more useful of the three. Mario I'm indifferent to. Fire flowers are nice, and later abilities in the series help exponentially, but it just never seemed as interesting as how Mega Man cannibalizes his opponents. Sonic's attitude always felt forced to me. I figured it was just a marketing gimmick by Sega. But I also never cared for Sonic games either.BurningDoom wrote:1. Wait, so are you ranking the characters or games?
As far as games go, Mario wins for me. Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World are quite possibly the two best platformers of all time.
Mega Man 2 is a great game, never really got into the series beyond that. The other NES games pale in comparison and I never gave the SNES titles a shot.
Sonic games are "good but not great". Fun to play for a few minutes now and then, but the slippery controls and haphazard stage design keep me from truly loving them

Eh, with that criteria I would still argue in favor of Mega Man. I prefer the music, the graphics, and the subtle changes to the character's abilities which improved him over time. There are weak points in the formula, yes. I dislike Mega Man 8. But overall I prefer the series to the games in both the Mario and Sonic series.
This is just their main line of series though. If we expanded it to all media, it would be a difficult decision to knock out Mario. The Mario sports titles are good, I love the Mario Kart series, I'm impressed by the use of the character in educational programs even though I don't find the games particularly good, and I feel the Mario-based RPGs are better than the Mega Man-based RPGs, though I do enjoy games like Mega Man Legends.
