I watch current anime. Some of it is very good, some of it is terrible. Just like anything else :)

Standalone movies are still being released, they just get less press. Check out Recollections of a Certain Pilot! It's new-school animation done right, and the rest of it is pretty old-fashioned.

Thank you, I'll make sure I check it out.

So I finished Nurse Angel Ririka SOS, which is really great and could be pretty dang sad. I also watched the live-action musical which was... really weird.

Now I'm watching Kyatto-Ninden Teyandee (Japanese version of Samurai Pizza Cats) which fills me with EXTREME HAPPINESS. Samurai Pizza Cats was pretty much the show that led me down the path of anime fandom and I had only seen clips of the original as super low-quality RealPlayer videos from years and years ago. Having the whole thing on DVD is really satisfying. It's so different from most of the anime I've been watching and that's kind of refreshing!

I'm half way through the first season of Slayers now. I'm really enjoying it so far. I don't usually laugh at sight gags, but this show has me in stitches.

It gets better as it goes too. Not a mindblowing series, but definitely fun stuff that's a trip back to the 90's. Most of the sequels sound great too, although I think one of them is a bit more serious than others and thus got some mixed reactions from some fans.

Does anyone know of a good, somewhat realistic martial arts anime? Movies are fine. Fantasy and sci-fi are fine. Medieval MA, fencing, boxing, wrestling, karate, whatever. I just want a good story with some good fight scenes - somewhat grounded in reality.

Good choice - Bamboo Blade
Bad choice - Kenichi

Best choice: Fighting Spirit (aka Hajime no Ippo)
It's really tough to find on DVDs nowadays, but it's an AWESOME boxing series.

Finished watching the first season of Slayers. Overall, I was really tickled by it. My only complaint is, considering the pacing of the rest of the show, that they spent too much time dragging out the final "reveal" and ending. Other than that, bravo.

I've got the Seasons 1-3 box set, so I can dig into those at any time. If I like them (which I probably will) then I'll look into picking up 4 and 5. If I remember correctly, they were made, what, over ten years after the third one? Interesting time delay there.

For now, I think I'll move on to something else though. My original idea this summer was to watch through my Sailor Moon collection before the new anime came out. But since it's been delayed (damn it! ), I'm going thought the stuff I haven't dedicated too much time too, or haven't watched in forever.

Decisions, decisions.....
