Saturn Cd board fried?

Well I did see a plume of smoke coming from the CD board area, shortly after plugging it in along with the strong smell of burning and I am 99% the mark was not there beforehand.
I have contemplated for a while whether to put the power cable in the green connector so I did study the board for a bit.

And I have tried gently rubbing it off but it won't.

Well we can't tell from a picture, but you get to look at it in person. I would imagine if you ran your finger over it you'd feel if there was an impression there or some kind of roughness.

I did paint the metal chassis around the motherboard to black as it was very rusted, would I have covered something causing it to short?

Well I don't know anything about shorting, but that metal is a shield. If you painted it, it might not have continuity to ground anymore. If it's not grounded, then it's not working as a shield. The console will be susceptible to interference. What problems that will actually translate into, I don't know.

Hmm that seemingly plastic strip that holds the Cd board down seems to be the ground.

Oh, I forgot to say... You said it was very rusted. That can't be good. That means it was stored some where not nice like a basement for a long time. You should have your friend check over the entire thing for any components that might have corroded.

Will do. It was in the attic for about 2 years I'd say, in a sealed cardboard box.
All the circuitry looked as new and it worked just fine before I have attempted the chip installation/paint job.
I think the chip might not be the best either, might go for something like this: http://www.segastyle.com/store/index.ph ... duct_id=76
Heard good things about it. Any feedback on it?

Ok I had another look at the board(s) and the only thing I could find that looks like it is blown is this thing below, that's on the mainboard beside the CD board power cable:



Does anyone what is the purpose of that piece?

Oh yeah, that's definitely toast. I'm not sure offhand, what's the letter and number code above it? L something? C ones are capacitors, R resistors, that one to the left it T for transistor. The code might help figure it out. I'd say that's the problem though.

I believe it was a C. Would need to double check once I get home.
Can that be replaced? If not, I think this guy did the same thing, and then he sucked power from the PSU to make the drive work again.



I wish to know how to wire that, if anyone knows.
