Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I've never watched a cooking show where the chef says "I need to take a taste just to make sure..." and follow it up with "That's disgusting". It's always "That is Perfect!".

The great part is that the first half of this quote is a legitimate point; why does Tarantino get n-word privileges? And then she completely sinks it with the second half.Luke wrote:"Quentin Tarantino uses the word as is praised. I say it and I lose millions. I think she is just a bit to old to be hiding behind her 'Pappy'. Paula is just as bad as freaking Rachel Ray. Her and her 'gumbo'. Claiming that since her Daddy lived in the south that gave her the ability to cook.
*grumble something about real southern women and cooking grumble*
I'm here for your body.

I also question why so many push for the end of the use of the n-word, yet so many others push it in music and various forms of humor. Make it a joke or get rid of it, don't attempt to do both.MrPopo wrote:The great part is that the first half of this quote is a legitimate point; why does Tarantino get n-word privileges? I'm sure it's probably far more convoluted than that. For many it's a term of endearment. Many within the African American/Black community find it to be a derogatory term and one that would eventually like to be removed from use entirely. If you don't identify with that racial identity, it's not appropriate for you to use at all, and Paula Deen's backlash is one that comes from ignorance, lack of awareness, and insincerity.Forlorn Drifter wrote: I also question why so many push for the end of the use of the n-word, yet so many others push it in music and various forms of humor. This is what I thought of her poor attempt of making amends on Today this morning.

Step 2. Stop crying.
Additionally: Why don't we get rid of all of the sports teams, rotary wing aircraft, and automobiles that use Native American namesakes.

Because despite having tried (and in some cases have managed a modicum of success), Native Americans have failed to garner the support necessary to change these things. That's not to say that their cause is any less justified, just that it is generally less noticed.Blu wrote:Additionally: Why don't we get rid of all of the sports teams, rotary wing aircraft, and automobiles that use Native American namesakes.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I guess Paula Deen better get something set up with Jesse Jackson right away, so this whole thing can get sorted out.

How many of them use outright offensive names? I mean is a Jeep Cherokee offensive? Or Chicago Blackhawks?Ack wrote:Because despite having tried (and in some cases have managed a modicum of success), Native Americans have failed to garner the support necessary to change these things. Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.
