I get why people like the Potter series, it just couldn't hold my interest. In all honesty, I can't think of any series of books or films that tell one story over so many installments that ever have. It's just too much.

Each GoT ep is 1 hour. Each Potter movie is 2 hours, maybe 2.30. So there's basically 16 or 17 hours worth of Potter. And currently, there are 30 hours of GoT, with at least 40 more hours planned, which is probably more like 50 hours if they split books like they did with book 3 and season 3 & 4. Also, Game of Thrones is INFINITELY more convoluted than the Harry Potter universe.

Please understand I'm not defending Potter with rabid religiousness, I like Thrones too quite a bit. Its just the argument that doesn't make any sense to me.

Well, your statement is false then, as A Song of Ice and Fire a long-running book series (which is planned to be at least as long as the Harry Potter series) that tells the story of a country from the point of view of the players involved in its politics. If it has held your interest, then it's an example of one series managing to perform what you couldn't think of.

Of course, it's also an extraordinarily well-written series.

You, Ack, DSH, and I are the only ones here that watch those kind of movies, and - for better or for worse - great cinema simply does not generate heated debate like superheroes and boy wizards...

That said, I watched White Mane (1953) last night. It was a beautiful, excellent, children's(?) short film that one several awards at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival. I loved the dream-like atmosphere, the beautiful landscapes, the fantastic black-and-white cinematography, and the "children's logic" employed by its narrative. My only problem with it was the English-language narrator, who sounded exactly like the narrator on Thomas the Tank Engine. (Members with small children will know what I am talking about...) I kept expecting him to start talking about Sir Topham Hat and the Island of Sodor...which distracted somewhat from my enjoyment of a beautiful film. (I would have preferred sub-titles, but I can understand why they would not be included in a children's film.)

There are a few others who would watch these as well, I believe. Pulsar, Fastbilly, etc. That said, I haven't seen the first two in the trilogy involving Before Midnight, so I don't want to simply go see it. Frances Ha, perhaps, but it is only showing at two theaters in the city. That said, I am interested in checking out the Tara theater, so I may go see it soon.

Oh, and I recently watched In the Name of the King, an Uwe Boll film. I hate that man.

There are dozens of franchises that have multiple movies, some more episodic, some as part of one long arc, some a combination of both. The HP movies, particularly the first 4 all play well as stand-alone episodic movies - certainly if I didn't care for any of those, or certainly if I didn't care for 2 of them, I'd move on...

I guess you'd say HP is different in that it is one long story, but that is your perception, i'd argue they are all good stand alone films, i'd also argue all of the above series follow a general arc too, the main difference being that most of the above were not pre-determined long running series, it just happened that way.

As far as convoluted...geez, show me a movie that wasn't convoluted. I can't remember the last movie I watched where something completely unfathomable was not happening. Well, I mean, other than the Avengers.
